Fundraiser to benefit Courage for Kiera Foundation scholarships
A yard sale fundraiser will be held beginning at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday at 396 Fernway Drive, Hollidaysburg, to raise money for the Courage for Kiera Foundation.
The foundation was created in July 2017 in memory of Kiera Chirdon, an Altoona Area High School student who, after a long battle with a rare childhood cancer (epithelial sarcoma), passed away at the age of 16.
Kiera was a violinist with a passion for music, her church, her family and her community.
The founder of the foundation, Madilyn Fulchiero, a 17-year-old AAHS student, was a friend and admirer of Kiera.
Madilyn and Kiera first met at a Griffith Family Foundation event, where Kiera was an ambassador and Madilyn was attending in support of her grandfather, Dr. Gregory Fulchiero, who at the time was battling pancreatic cancer.
Madi and Kiera would later find themselves in gym class together at Altoona Area Junior High School, where their friendship began.
The foundation’s goals are to raise funds annually and to give 100 percent of the proceeds in the form of scholarships to musically gifted students who have courageously overcome challenges in their lives.
After conducting its first yard sale fundraiser in 2017, the foundation was able to give $4,000 in college scholarships to seniors in the Altoona Area High School music department.
The foundation has been collecting yard sale items for months. The goal is to not only give scholarships in Altoona, but to also give additional scholarships at the Hollidaysburg Area High School.
In addition to the yard sale, Kiera’s family will hold a bake sale that day to benefit the foundation.
