Blair County Democratic Committee presents scholarship

Erin is recipient of the Sen. Ted Kennedy Memorial Scholarship. This award, sponsored by the Blair County Democratic Committee, is given annually to a young, Blair County Democrat enrolled in a college or technical institute.

McKenna is a 2018 graduate of Tyrone Area High School. She has been accepted into the nursing program at Mount Aloysius College, Cresson.

Horseshoe Seniors plan dinner-dance

The Horseshoe Seniors will hold a dinner-dance on Thursday at the Bavarian Hall, 112 S. 13th St., Altoona.

Dinner is at 5:30 p.m., followed by three hours of dancing to music by a DJ.

Admission is $10 per person. Singles and couples are welcome.

This is a fun evening for seniors, and new people are encouraged to come out and enjoy a time of friendship, fellowship and companionship with others.

This dinner-dance is usually held on the third Thursday of each month. Reservations need to be made by the Monday before each event.

Educators attend state convention

STATE COLLEGE — Nearly 300 women attended the Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Alpha Alpha Pennsylvania State Organization Convention held June 15 to 17 at The Nittany Lion Inn on the Penn State University campus.

Five members from Beta Epsilon Chapter participated in various workshops and events. They include Susan Blazosky, teacher, State Correctional Facility-Somerset; Amy Dobbins and Marcia Erickson, teachers, Hollidays-burg Area School District; Mari Grace Lingenfelter, teacher, Conemaugh Township School District; and Waneta Lingenfelter, retired, Philipsburg Osceola Area School District.

Chapter award winners included Erickson, immediate past president and webmaster; Mari Grace Lingenfelter, president; and Waneta Lingenfelter, nominations committee.

Erickson received a 2018 Enrichment Grant to enhance her seventh-grade world history instruction. The grant will be used to travel to the Four Corners Region of the Southwest Region of the U.S. to learn more about its prehistoric civilizations. Mari Grace Lingenfelter received a 2018 Enrichment Grant to introduce new conducting and rehearsal techniques to her classes. The grant will be used to participate in the Carnegie Hall Summer Music Educators’ Workshop. Waneta Lingenfelter was included in the 2018 Album of Distinction for her exemplary service as a Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees member. She also received a PASR Clearfield County Certificate of Appreciation Award.

Erickson presented a workshop titled “DKG Next, DKG Future.” The convention’s theme was “Circle of Membership.” It encouraged members to broaden their DKG journey by exploring scholarship, leadership, mentorship, fellowship and friendship.
