Retreat to focus on addiction, distress

Do you or someone you know fear seeking help for addiction with the possibility of having to commit to a long term, expensive inpatient treatment facility?

St. Jude Retreat Ministries will host a life changing retreat from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Comfort Inn, 130 Patchway Road, Duncansville. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m.

It is for those facing challenges with addictions and emotional distress personally or through association by family, spouse or friend.

St. Jude is a nonprofit, charitable, God-centered spiritual organization reaching out to those in despair. You are never alone because the group offers continual ongoing support.

The instructor is a seasoned behavioral health therapist and a former clinical supervisor for UPMC in Pittsburgh with over 40 years’ experience.

The cost is by donation to defray expenses. Lunch and beverages are included.

Fort to host Revolutionary War Days

Revolutionary War Days will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Fort Roberdeau Historic Site, 383 Fort Roberdeau Road, Altoona.

American Patriots defend the Lead Mine Fort as British loyalists and Native Americans wait for an opportunity to attack. Major battle re-enactments occur each afternoon at 3 p.m.

Become immersed in 18th century field camp life by visiting the Patriot and Loyalist camps. Watch an 18th-century fashion show. Play with toys and games Colonial children enjoyed. Visit with George and Martha Washington as they share their experience of the Revolutionary War. Enjoy summertime favorite foods at the Fort concession stand.

The program is designed to tell a story based on local events from the beginning of the event on Saturday morning through its conclusion on Sunday afternoon.

Admission and parking are free.

Hazardous waste collection starts Friday

The 2018 annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Peoples Natural Gas Field’s VIP parking lot.

The cost is $15 per car trunk load and 50 cents per pound for all paint.

Clean out the basement, garage, and under the kitchen sink for this once-a-year event.

Sailors association to meet July 19

The Horseshoe Curve Chapter 37, Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, will meet for lunch at noon July 19 at the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company, 205 S. Market St.

The cost of the luncheon is $15, which includes a $3 donation to the fire hall.

The dues are $10 per year or $50 for life.

Those attending are asked to take nonperishable food items to donate to the Martinsburg Food Pantry.

DESA is planing a bus trip to Washington, D.C., on July 30 for the “Veterans Honor Tour.”
