Courtesy photos Randy Thompson and Brady Appleman dramatize a Scottish Rite degree at the Valley of Altoona’s semi-annual reunion on April 29 at the Jaffa Shrine Center in Altoona. The reunion is held to initiate new members and to entertain existing members with plays designed to stimulate character-building discussions. The Valley has 1,300 members and meets monthly at the Shrine. Any Master Mason may join. Call the Valley secretary for more information at 244-7193.

Blair Garden Club sets plant sale

The Blair Garden Club will hold its plant sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Jaggard First Methodist Church, 1801 Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona.

The club will have a good selection of plants available, mostly perennials, including some native Pennsylvania plants. These plants are from members’ gardens, and club members will be there to offer their expertise on gardening.

The Jaggard First Methodist Church will also hold its bake sale on Friday.

Horseshoe Seniors to hold dinner-dance

The Horseshoe Seniors will hold a dinner-dance on Thursday at the Bavarian Hall, 112 S. 13th St., Altoona.

Dinner is at 5:30 p.m., followed by three hours of dancing to music by a DJ.

Admission is $10 per person. Singles and couples are welcome.

The dinner-dance is a monthly event, usually held the third Thursday of every month. Reservations need to be made by the Monday before each event.

Genealogical group to host other societies

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair County Genealogical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Roller Hojeth Memorial Library, 431 Scotch Valley Road.

This month, representatives from several lineage societies will provide information on each society and information about membership in the societies.

n Daughters of the War of 1812 — Margaret Skrivseth.

n Sons of the Grand Army of the Republic — John Crider.

The presentation is free and open to the public, and all are encouraged to attend.

Society recognizes photographer of year

Matt Stich was recognized as Photographer of the Year at the 66th Banquet of the ABC Photo Society, held April 16 at Jethro’s.

Stich was named both Print Photographer and Projected Image Photographer, taking the highest points in both competitions.

The banquet was chaired by president, Eric Gaston.

Stich, Randy Klobetanz, Eric Gaston and Jen Shoemaker took top scores for the club year.

The society enters competitions held by the Photo-graphic Society of America, competing against photographers all over the world.

Klobetanz received an honorable mention for his image “Stairway.”

Sally Becker received an honorable mention for her image “Circles of Time.”

Stich received an Award of Merit for his image “To Light Your Way.”

Brandon Hirt took an honorable mention for “Boneyard Sunrise”

“Sandstone Sculpture” by Randy Klobetanz took an Award of Merit.

The ABC Photo Society meets at 7:15 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month at the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library and holds photo outings for some summer meetings. For more information, visit www.abcps.clubs.

The Altoona Duplicate Bridge Club has announced the winners of its recent games.

Games are open to the public and are held at 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 12:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Hollidays-burg American Legion Social Hall.
