Breathe Pennsylvania cruise to set sail June 15

Educational event offers expert discussion on living better with COPD

PITTSBURGH — Breathe Pennsylvania will hold its annual “Breathing in the ‘Burgh” Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Cruise from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 15 on the Gateway Clipper Fleet in Station Square.

Breathe Pennsylvania is a nonprofit organization that helps the residents of southwestern Pennsyl-vania achieve and maintain optimal lung health.

COPD refers to a group of diseases that cause airflow blockage and breathing-related problems, including chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema.

According to the COPD Foundation, the disease affects an estimated 30 million people nationwide with as many as half undiagnosed.

As it is the organization’s mission to help people breathe better and live healthier, the cruise gives individuals the opportunity to relax along Pittsburgh’s three rivers and participate in discussions focusing on living better with COPD.

“Some people who have COPD are prone to social isolation because they are afraid to leave their homes — whether they are on oxygen or they are afraid that they’ll have trouble breathing when they are out,” said Marianne Drevna, director of adult health education and programs at Breathe Pennsylvania.

“The cruise gives people the opportunity to enjoy an outing while feeling safe and comfortable.”

The cost is $10 and includes one guest registration and lunch for both cruisers.

Breathe Pennsylvania will provide boarding assistance to COPD patients and caregivers.

Registration and payment are required by Friday by calling 724-772-1750 or by visiting www.breathepa.org.
