Armed Forces Day events planned for May 19
Armed Forces Day will be celebrated on May 19 at The Wall That Heals at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center
on Pleasant Valley Boulevard, Altoona.
This program will honor Korean War veterans, and each veteran from that era will receive a pin.
Those wishing to be honored should contact Ivan Riggle at
935-3829 by May 14.
Displays by local service organizations and military equipment will open at 9 a.m.
There will be a concert of patriotic music provided during the day by the Forest Hills Community Band.
The Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will advance the Colors, followed by the Jaffa Highlanders playing “Amazing Grace.”
The main program will begin at
2 p.m. WTAJ’s John Clay will be the master of ceremonies.
The main speaker will be Maj. Harold Stitt, an Altoona native and a recipient of the Bronze Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, 39 Air Medals, two Army Commenda-tion Medals and Senior Aviator Wings.
The event will conclude with a wreath-laying ceremony at The Wall That Heals by local service organizations. All organizations wishing to place a wreath should contact Patty Davis at 943-0261 by May 14.
Retiring of the Colors will follow with the recessional by the Jaffa Highlanders.
