Knights of Columbus to hold free-throw

The Knights of Columbus, Star of the Sea Council 4245, Hollidaysburg, will hold its Free Throw Championship from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s School gym in Newry.

Registration is from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

The competition is free, but donations of non-perishable food items for local food bank are encouraged.

The competition is open to boys and girls ages 7 to 14 as of Jan. 1, 2018. Participants must take proof of age and may only participate in one council competition.

Awards for all age groups will be given. Winners ages 9 to 14 will advance to district competition in Bellwood in several weeks.

Bridge club announces recent winners

The Altoona Duplicate Bridge Club has announced the winners of its recent games.

Jan. 3 — Tudor Trifan and Helen Gorsuch, first; Ed McCauley and Bill Pounds, second; Dave Dravis and Marcia Dravis, third; Akbar Samii and Betty Covino, fourth.

Jan. 10 — North/South: Summer Rifkah and Thana Moussa, first; Ted Shade and Phyllis Robbins, second; Marcia Dravis and Dave Dravis, third. East/West: Mark Blanchard and Tudor Trifan, first; Irv Seltzer and JoEllen Gehl, second; Joh Regan and Helen Gorsuch, third.

Jan. 11 — Mark Blanchard and Hope Sheehan, first; Summer Rifkah and Thana Moussa, second; Irv Seltzer and Ed McCauley, third; Carol Moyer and Cheryl Wherry, fourth.

Games are open to the public and are held at 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 12:30 p.m. Thursdays at the American Legion Social Hall in Hollidaysburg.

Golden Nuggets to hold dinner-dance

The Golden Nuggets senior citizens club in Altoona will hold a dinner-dance at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bavarian Hall, Altoona.

The cost is $10 per person. Three hours of dancing will be held in the upstairs ballroom after the meal. The club is accepting new members.

Schuhplattlers to hold fish dinners

The Altoona Almrausch Schuhplattlers (German dance group) will hold its 11th annual fish dinners from Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14) and Fridays through Good Friday (March 30) at the Unter Uns Club, Van Buren Avenue and 14th Street.

The dinners will be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m. or until sold out. Dinners include a choice of baked or fried haddock fish, baked macaroni and cheese or scalloped potatoes, stewed tomatoes, cole slaw, rolls and butter.

Homemade desserts and coffee will also be available.

The dinners cost $9 for adults, $5 for children ages 4 to 10 and for children ages 3 and younger. You do not have to be member of the club to attend these dinners as they are open to the public. You will be served by the dancers so there is no standing in line.

Historical society offers scholarship

BEDFORD — The Bedford County Historical Society is reminding this year’s Bedford County graduating high school seniors to apply for the Mary Alice (Hall) Mock History Award.

Those interested in applying must register with the Bedford County Historical Society and obtain pre-approval of their research project. The project should highlight a topic of historical significance associated with Bedford County.

The deadline for the complete submission of all requirements is March 31. Contact your high school guidance counselor and/or the historical society at 623-2011 for more information.

Former center employees to meet

The Pennsylvania State Retirees of the Cresson, Altoona and Ebensburg Centers will meet for lunch at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Prime Sirloin Buffet in Duncansville.

BCAAC plans Sweetheart Dance Feb. 10

The Blair County Antique Auto Club will hold a Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Dance from 8 to 11 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Bavarian Hall, 112 S. 13th St., Altoona.

Music will be provided by The Boomers. Potato chips, pretzels and door prizes will be provided.
