Breakfast fundraiser set for Sunday

NEWRY — A “Breakfast Buffet for Adam” will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday in the cafeteria at St. Patrick’s School. The event is sponsored by the CCD classes of St. Patrick’s and St. Catherine of Siena Catholic churches.

The buffet will include pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, muffins, fruit salad, cereal, coffee, orange juice and hot cocoa. The cost is $6 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and children ages 4 to 12 and free for children ages 3 and younger. A basket raffle will be held.

The fundraiser will benefit the family of Shannon and Rickey Matherne of Duncansville, whose youngest of five children, Adam, drowned in the family swimming pool on June 5 when he was 14 months old. Adam’s heart started beating again as he was being baptized after being dead for more than 80 minutes. Adam was airlifted to Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh.

Adam has defied the doctor’s prognosis and continues to improve, but he needs hyperbaric oxygen and stem cell infusions that are considered “alternative” medicine for drownings and are not covered by insurance.

Because the parents need to travel from Pennsylvania for these procedures, transportation, respiratory therapists, nurses, therapy sessions, equipment and other travel expenses will be out of pocket, as well.
