Ward recognizes centenarians at Garvey

A centenarian celebration was held at Garvey Manor where more than 600 years was represented by the centenarians alone.

Garvey Manor is home for six residents who are 100 years and older.

The oldest resident is 104 years old.

State Rep. Judy Ward was the guest speaker to present the centenarians with a certificate of recognition for their 100th birthday.

Among them were Carmella DeRubeis, Dorothy Sharer and Erma Kennedy.

n DeRubeis was born July 10, 1917, in Altoona, the daughter of Delores and Nicolas Mignogna and was married to the late Deno DeRubeis. She has two sons, Joseph and Alex DeRubeis.

She had been employed by the Altoona Area School District and is a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Altoona.

n Sharer was born Oct. 14, 1916, in Tyrone, the daughter of Oscar and Ruth Hample. Her husband, Robert, is deceased. She has four children: Catherine, Robert Carol, Robin and Bonnie.

She was a homemaker and enjoys reading.

n Kennedy was born June 30, 1915, in Spruce Creek, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ciampoli. Her husband, Clarence, is deceased. She has two children: Arlene and Arthur. Both are deceased.

She worked at the Penn State Altoona Book Store and is a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Altoona. She enjoys reading, church and family activities.
