Park enjoys successful bluebird season

PATTON — Prince Gallitzin State Park boasts a volunteer bluebird program that has been active for more than 35 years.

Seven bluebird volunteers monitor the park’s 125 nesting boxes on a weekly basis through the spring and summer months, recording bird species, number of eggs and the number of hatchlings fledged.

The volunteers also clean and prepare the boxes each spring in preparation for the birds’ use, and maintain the boxes throughout the nesting season.

Thanks to their efforts, a total of 191 young eastern bluebirds fledged during the 2017 nesting season. In addition, 247 tree swallows and 38 house wrens began their existence in the park this year.

The Prince Gallitzin cavity nesting program also includes three American kestrel nest boxes and 14 purple martin nesting gourds.

The kestrels successfully fledged 14 young this year, while the martins fledged 53 young. These results were achieved by the long-term dedicated efforts of David Gobert from Patton.

The program’s other faithful volunteers include Arlene Ayer from Ashville (14 years), Judy Letso from Patton (12 years), Richard Shovestall from Northern Cambria (seven years), Robert and Winnie Illig from Carrolltown (two years) and Mimi Bradley from Dysart (two years).

Each of these volunteers, led by long-time volunteer, John Salvetti, contributed to produce another year of nesting success at the park.

Prince Gallitzin State Park would like to thank all of the volunteer nest monitors for their time and efforts, and looks forward to many more years of this enduring partnership.
