Ward Transport presents scholarships to students

Ward Transport & Logistics Corp. announced the winners of its 2017 Ward Scholarship program.

This year’s recipients, Brandon Imler and Carlee Gump, were chosen on June 19.

Four finalists, which also included runners-up Kaitlyn Plunket and Jacob Banks, completed a written essay and individual interviews, toured the Ward General Office, sat in on a presentation by James Ward, manager of sales development and supply chain.

They also attended lunch with Ward family members and the scholarship judges: C. David Kimmel, former associate director for stewardship for Penn State Altoona; Janie Christner, VP Home Health at Home Nursing Agency; and Margie Yon, sales manager of Lamar Outdoor Advertising.

Originally established in 1957 with a single $500 award, the Ward Scholarship program has continued to grow and now provides $10,000 to two winners, as well as a $250 prize for two runners-up annually.

Eligibility for the scholarship is open to the children of all full-time employees of Ward Transport & Logistics Corp.

Nason Hospital Auxiliary

awards scholarship

ROARING SPRING — The Nason Hospital Auxiliary awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Danielle Ebersole.

Danielle is a 2017 graduate of Claysburg-Kimmel High School and the daughter of Dana and Jacob Ebersole.

Students from area high schools were invited to submit an application and essay on their reasons for pursuing a healthcare career.

More than 25 entries from seven area school districts were received.

Danielle’s submission was chosen by a panel compiled of Nason Auxiliary members and retired educators. Danielle plans to attend West Virginia University School of Pharmacy.

Tyrone Hospital staff awards scholarship

TYRONE — The Tyrone Hospital Medical Staff has awarded a scholarship to Allison Hosko, a 2017 graduate of Tyrone Area High School.

The medical staff awards a scholarship annually to a senior at Tyrone Area High School who will pursue a health care profession.

Hosko will pursue a degree in nursing at Penn State Altoona.

Hosko’s activities while a student at Tyrone Area High School included participation in the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) program, tennis, swimming and softball.

She also hosted a secret family at Christmas. Additionally, she volunteered at the nursery at her church.

Glendale Drama Club

to present fall musical

FLINTON — The Glendale Drama Club will present “Into the Woods, Jr.” the school’s first ever fall musical.

The presentations will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. Nov. 4 and 2 p.m. Nov. 5 in the Glendale High School auditorium.

All general admission tickets for all shows are $5 — with no reserved seats.

For the Nov. 4 shows only, the Drama Club is offering a special “meet-and-greet” program — starting at noon for the 2 p.m. show and at 5 p.m. for the 7 p.m. show.

For $10 per person (which includes the $5 show ticket), participants will receive an autograph book, a snack for children and a chance to meet and take photos of the characters from “Into the Woods”– before the cast personally escorts their guests to their seat for the show.

Myers students to send stockings to troops

BELLWOOD — Myers Elemen-tary School will partner with Military Families Ministry to send stockings to deployed service members this year.

This school-wide service project will be launched during a school assembly at 2:45 p.m. Nov. 14 at Myers Elementary School, where Santa, military service members, and Terri Harpster, Myers Elemen-tary principal, will address the students.

Nov. 14 has been declared Red, White and Blue Day for the kick-off assembly.

Kindergarten students will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Other students will sing patriotic songs.

Students, families, faculty and staff will donate all of the items to fill the stockings.

Funds donated by local businesses will be used to ship the stockings, and all excess funds raised will be used to make and ship additional care packages for deployed service members.

PTO and other parent volunteers will sort the donated items and assist students with the packing of stockings.

Every student will bring their hand-made card for the service members on Dec. 1, then pick items from each box and stuff their own stocking.

Stockings will be stuffed and prepared for shipping from 9:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 1 at the school.

Stockings will be shipped to deployed military service members, prioritizing service members and their units who have connections to students at Myers Elementary School or Bellwood-Antis community members.

Military Families Ministry’s mission is to support service members and their families by providing care packages, encouragement, and prayer.

MFM is committed to increasing awareness of the sacrifices made daily by military families.

Glendale to host PSU ‘Essence of Joy Choir’

FLINTON — The Glendale High School Choir will host of the Penn State “Essence of Joy Choir” under the direction of Anthony Leach, who is in his final year as director.

The concert will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Glendale High School auditorium.

Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students, with tickets being sold at the door.

Glendale High School is the first stop on the fall tour for Essence of Joy, a choir focusing on music from the African and African-American traditions.

This event will be the inaugural concert for the new Yamaha concert grand piano, which was recently purchased after a 10-year fundraising effort.

Bishop Carroll to present ‘Sleepy Hollow’ this week

EBENSBURG — The Bishop Carroll Drama Club will present “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at

7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the high school cafetorium, 728 Ben Franklin Highway.

The doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is $5 for students and $8 for adults. Tickets are only available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.
