Patton Garden Club visits Flight 93

PATTON — On Sept. 7, Mary Lou Colussy, Barb Pompa and Helen Ivory of the Patton Garden Club joined Somerset Garden Club members at the Children’s Peace Garden at the Flight 93 Memorial Chapel in Shanksville.

The members weeded and planted garden mums at the Peace Garden for the 9/11 ceremonies held there.

At the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania District VI annual meeting held at the U.S. Hotel Restaurant & Tavern in Hollidaysburg, club member Rita Hilyer was presented the Central Atlantic Region of State Garden Clubs’ Perennial Bloom Award.

This award is presented to longtime members who have made the clubs grow and bloom with their continuous support of the garden club goals and objectives.

Hilyer has served as officer and chairman over the years not only with the local club, but on the state level, as well. She has been an enthusiastic supporter of the club in its many endeavors and has inspired members with her love of gardening.

The club’s next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Patton Public Library, with a program on youth gardening. The presenter will be Nate Wharton, a science teacher in the Cambria Heights School District.

Anyone with an interest in gardening, flowers, horticulture or joining the club is welcome to attend a meeting or call Mary Lou at 674-5239 for more information.

Golden Nuggets to hold dinner-dance

The Golden Nuggets Club in Altoona will hold a dinner-dance at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bavarian Hall, Altoona. The cost is $10 per person. Three hours of dancing will be held in the upstairs ballroom after the meal. The club is accepting new members.

Nursing alumni to mark Thanksgiving

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Altoona Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association will celebrate Thanksgiving at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 9 at The Dream Restaurant, 1500 Allegheny St.

Those attending will order from the menu and pay individually.

The deadline to sign up is Oct. 27 by calling Patty Elliott at 946-5204.

Catholic Daughters mark anniversary

Our Lady of the Alieghenies Court No. 1755 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas celebrated the 60th anniversary of the court’s founding on Sept. 24 at the American Legion Social Hall, Hollidaysburg.

The commemoration began with Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg, followed by a buffet dinner and entertainment at the American Legion.

Among those giving remarks were Council Chaplain Father Anthony Legarski of St. Mary’s Church, CDA National Director Peggy Guckin, State CDA Regent Peg Witas and Knights of Columbus Grand Knight Rich Moyer.

State Sen. John H. Eichelberger Jr. and State Rep. Judy Ward read a citation and a congratulations from the state. Pat Gildea, representing Hollidaysburg Mayor John Stultz, read a proclamation from the borough.

Memorable highlights and vignettes were provided by court members chronicling charitable works and other significant events occurring during the past 60 years.

The Court Choir made its formal debut at the celebration.

Along with the 60th year celebration, the court celebrated welcoming its 100th member.

Blair Garden Club members visit garden

Blair Garden Club members enjoyed a visit to Aimee Itle’s “Country Dahlias” garden in Cresson.

She gave tips on growing and storing dahlias.

The club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the community room at the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library. The speaker is John Frederick, director of the Intermunicipal Relations Committee, which is a council of governments overseeing recycling and composting in Blair County.

Members also will complete their holiday decorations for the tree at the Altoona Area Public Library.

Interested individuals are welcome to attend.

Horseshoe Chorus to meet Tuesday

The Altoona Horseshoe Chorus meets at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Zion Lutheran Church Hall, 500 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg.

The all-male chorus sings four-part harmony a cappella music.

Interested men can stop by any time.
