The meat was provided, and the community brought side dishes and desserts to share. Lion Deb Baker was chairperson of the event. The financial ability of the Lions to maintain and operate the pool is due to the fundraising efforts of many Lions.

Catholic Daughters to meet Wednesday

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Our Lady of the Alleghenies Court No. 1755, will meet at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

At 6 p.m., a refresher on praying the Rosary and the Power of the Rosary will be conducted by Gloria Kolonich.

Members are asked to go to the Duncansville VFW at 5 p.m. Oct. 17 to help make ham and cheese sandwiches. Delivery is Oct. 18. Orders must be phoned to Mary Dively at 239-5065 by today. Cost is $3 per sandwich.

WISE Women sets membership meeting

WISE Women of Blair County will hold its ninth annual membership meeting at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Hampton Inn, 180 Charlotte Drive, Altoona.

Founders and members are invited to attend.

The meeting will include reports on the financial status and general activities of the organization and will include the election of the 2017-18 board of directors. Light refreshments will be served.

Fire safety education set for Oct. 21

MARTINSBURG — The Martinsburg Fire Department will offer public education on fire safety from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 21 in the parking lot at Long’s Outpost.

The fire department will display two of its fire trucks, with opportunities to board and tour both trucks. Several fire personnel will answer questions and provide literature on smoke detectors, carbon monoxide alarms and fire home safety.

The fire department will distribute plastic fireman’s hats, glow-in-the-dark bracelets, fidget spinners and coloring books for the kids.

A table will display examples of items causing fires or injuries, such as burnt switches, frayed cords, etc.

Refreshments will be provided.

Documentary to focus on recovery

“The Anonymous People,” a documentary on sharing the hope of recovery from addiction, will be shown at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Devorris Downtown Center, 1431 12th Ave., Altoona.

The event is sponsored by Rise for Recovery, Blair Drug and Alcohol Partnerships and The Penn State Altoona Health Advisory Board and the Alcohol and Other Drugs Prevention Subcommittee.

Conservation District seeks director

EBENSBURG — The Cambria County Commission-ers are accepting nominations for a farmer and public director for the Cambria County Conservation District.

Individuals interested in serving as a director must be nominated by one of the approved nominating organizations: West Branch Susquehanna Rescue, Cambria Farm Bureau, Growmark Farm Service, Society of Farm Women, Cambria Association of Township Officials, Cambria Chapter of Keep Cambria County Beautiful, Cambria Farm Service Agency, Cambria Pomona Grange, Cambria Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs and the Cambria Ag Land Preservation Board.

The district is governed by a nine-member board, which oversees a staff of nine. District staff work directly with landowners and other citizens to put conservation practices on the land and educate the community on environmental issues and trends.

Board members are not paid, but may receive reimbursement for expenses related to board activities.

Civics to hold membership drive

The Homers Gap Civic Association will hold its annual membership drive at 1 p.m. Oct. 15.

There will food, fun, games and fellowship. The public is welcome. Single membership is $20, and family membership is $35.

German students to present festival

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Hollidaysburg Arae High School German Club and Penn State Altoona German students will present “Gar-Kein-SCHRECK FEST (Not-So-Scary Festival)” from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School.

The event will include kid-friendly fall/Halloween fun (and learn a little German language and culture). There will be free admission and crafts, and food will be available for purchase.

The festival is based on preschool and elementary aged children, but all are welcome. The festival is made possible through a “German is Fun” grant from the American Association of Teachers of German.
