Courtesy photo Patton Garden Club presented its Garden of Distinc-tion Award to Texie and Annie Sunseri of Patton. Although the garden is small, they used a lot of color, a wall, a good mix of plants and several garden ornaments that caught the judge’s eye. The club will hold its next meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Patton Public Library. The program will be on Crown Bees presented by guest speaker Dr. Wilma Light. Anyone with an interest in gardening, flowers, horticulture or joining the club is welcome to attend a meeting or call Mary Lou at 674-5239 for more information.

Golden Nuggets to hold dinner-dance

The Golden Nuggets senior citizens club will hold a dinner-dance at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bavarian Hall, Altoona. The cost is $10 per person.

Three hours of dancing will be held in the upstairs ballroom after the meal. The club is accepting new members.

Horseshoe Cloggers plan ‘Try-It Night’

NEWRY — The Horseshoe Cloggers offer a FREE “Try-It-Night” on from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Newry Lions Club, directly behind Leighty’s Farm Market.

Clogging is similar to tap dancing. No previous experience is needed.

A 10-week course, taught by Tracie Madden, will teach all of the basics. The next series of classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays from Oct. 2 to Dec. 4 at Newry Lions Club. The cost is $60 for ages 6 and older. The graduation/Christmas party will be held Dec 11.

Clogging is for all ages of men, women, boys and girls and all levels. The group is mostly adult dancers who enjoy weekly classes. Many take advantage of social events and clogging weekends outside the area, and some cloggers do public performances and demonstrations.

Quilting bees to hold show Oct. 7

BELLWOOD — The Bellwood Quilting Bees will host a quilt show from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Logan’s Valley Baptist Church, Main and Boyles Street. Admission is free.

Cresson Legion plans social events

CRESSON — Cresson American Legion, Post 238, is planning two public dances.

A dance will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday in the grand ballroom, featuring the country/western band Can’t Hardly Wait Playboys.

A dance will be held from 8 to 11 p.m. Oct. 14 in the grand ballroom, featuring The Fabulous Flashbacks.

The doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

A full bar and menu will be available.

Cost is a $10 donation.

Kiwanis to laud distinguished citizen

The Kiwanis Club of Altoona will present its 2017 Distinguished Citizen Award to Lori J. Bechtel-Wherry at the Kiwanis’ annual dinner on Wednesday at The Calvin House in Duncansville.

Wherry, as chancellor and dean at Penn State Altoona, has been in that position since 2005 and has given back to the community through various organizations including several nonprofit and business organizations.
