Local student wins Lamar scholarship

BATON ROUGE, La. — Andrea Parrish is one of five winners nationwide to receive Lamar Advertising Co.’s President’s Scholar-ship.

George Foster, Lamar’s general manager, presented her with the first of 10 scholarship checks at Lamar’s office in Altoona.

Lamar will give students $1,000 per semester (must meet criteria) up to 10 semesters, as long as the student is an undergraduate.

Parrish is a 2016 graduate of Altoona Area High School and is in the physician assistant program at Saint Francis University, Loretto. Her extracurricular activities in college include the Physician Assistant Society, as well as serving as an orientation counselor, secretary of the Environmental Action Society, a member of the College Republicans and a volunteer for the United Way of Blair County and the Saint Francis Univer-sity Day of Service.

Parrish received awards for Provost List during her first and second semester of her freshman year of college.

In high school, she was captain of the varsity softball and varsity volleyball teams, a member of Tang Soo Do, Diversity Club, National Honor Society, Student Athlete Leader-ship Council and the Junior Class Executive Committee, served as sophomore class vice president, as well as a volunteer at UPMC Altoona and the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen. She was on the honor roll and received the Star Award, A-pin and Scholar-Athlete Award.

She is working at Chuck E. Cheese, Altoona, while attending college, and the Hollidaysburg Area YMCA as a camp counselor.

She is the daughter of Deborah Parrish, office manager at Lamar Adver-tising in Duncansville.

Lamar’s President’s Scholarship program began in 1995 and is available for the children of Lamar employees in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. The award is based on academic achievements, financial need, as well as activities, honors, awards and essay.

This year’s scholarship winners were selected from 24 qualified applicants.
