Altoona library sets August programs

Altoona Area Public Li-brary, 1600 Fifth Ave., has announced its August programs.

n A Beginner Zentangle Class will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday with Shelley Williams. Zentangle is a drawing method that uses simple, structured patterns to create a piece of art. The class is $10 and includes the kit. Call 946-0417, ext. 125, to sign up.

n A ceramics class with Fired Up Ceramics will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $5 per item. Participants will make a flower, butterfly or school bus. Call 946-0417, ext. 125, to register.

n Free Essential Oils Programs will include Cleaning Oils at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Back to School Oils for Health at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 14 and Endocrine at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21. Reserva-tions can be made by calling 946-0417, ext. 125.

n An All-Day Knit-In will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the board room. Teachers will be available. Beginners should take size 8 needles and some light-colored yarn. The program is free.

n The library will “Cele-brate the Snazzy ’60s” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Satur-day. Children ages 12 and younger are invited to wear their favorite ’60s attire. Children will learn about people and events of the ’60s, enjoy crafts and participate in activities. Registration is required by calling 946-0417, ext. 123.

n “Leap into Science: Design it, Build it” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday. For children ages 6 to 12 (plus caregivers). Registration is required by calling 946-0417, ext. 123.

n “Hop into Story Time with WFGY’s Leapin’ Lilly” from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 8. Children ages 12 and younger (plus caregivers). Call 946-0417, ext. 123, to register.

n Unleash the world of walking, talking robots from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 9 to 11. Children ages 8 to 12 (plus caregivers) are invited to participate in Lego Robotics. Call 946-0417, ext. 123, to register.

n Learn the fundamentals of Microsoft Windows during a four-week series, held from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays from Aug. 9 to 30 in Suite 2B. The cost is $10, due upon registration. Call 946-0417, ext. 129, to register.

n Katrina Pope, recycling education coordinator at the Intermunicipal Relations Committee, will be at the library at 5 p.m. Aug. 10 to talk about the ins and outs of recycling in the area and to answer questions.

n The “Talk About a Good Book” Discussion Group will meet at 6:45 p.m. Aug. 14 in the alumni room to discuss “The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri.

n The “Who Chose this Book?” Club will meet at 11 a.m. Aug. 15 to discuss “The Man in the High Castle” by Philip K. Dick. Call 946-0417, ext. 133, for more information.

n Children 6 to 12 (plus caregivers) are invited to participate in a new program using Lego Story

Starters, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 16 to 18. Story

Starter is a hands-on tool that inspires students to collaborate while creating and communicating stories using Legos and iPads as their tools. Call 946-0417, ext. 123, to register.

n A free movie will be shown on library’s big screen at 1 p.m. Aug. 19 in the library theater. “Beauty and the Beast” (2017, Rated PG, running time 129 minutes) will be shown.

n An Applebee’s “Dining to Donate” will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 20 to benefit the library. Stop by the library to pick up a flyer, and Applebee’s will donate 15 percent of your check when you dine at the Altoona location.

n In celebration of its 90th birthday, the library will continue its Historical Film Festival with a free showing of “Funny Girl (1968, Rated G) at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21 in the library theater.

n “Leap into Science: Do You See What I See” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Aug. 21. Children will play with light by shining light through objects, bouncing it off of shiny surfaces and blocking it to create shadows. For children ages 6 to 12 (plus caregivers). Registration is required by calling 946-0417, ext. 123.
