Margaret Van Scoyoc

Margaret C. Van Scoyoc of Altoona will celebrate her 95th birthday on Sunday.

She was born in Altoona July 16, 1922, daughter of Fred and Helen (Wilson) Carn.

She married Richard S. Van Scoyoc on June 23, 1951. He celebrated his 100th birthday in October.

They have one son, Timothy, of Altoona.

Mrs. Van Scoyoc is a 1940 graduate of Altoona High School; a 1944 graduate of Wilson College, Chambersburg, with a bachelor of arts degree; and a 1950 graduate of Pennsylvania State University, University Park, with a master’s degree in education.

She taught mathematics at Roosevelt Junior High School from 1947 to 1961.

She also studied voice, piano and organ.

Mrs. Van Scoyoc has served as organist at several local churches, including the former Simpson Methodist Church, Altoona, and the former 58th Street United Methodist Church (now Christ Community United Methodist, Altoona), where she was also choir director for 30 years.

She continues to serve as treasurer of the United Methodist Women at Christ Community United Methodist Church, Altoona, having formerly been president of the group.

She was active with Church Women United, serving on the nominating committee and as historian.

She is a life member of the American Associ-ation of University Women (AAUW), a member of the Blair County Historical Society and a member of Altoona Chapter 290, Order of the Eastern Star.

She served for 12 years on the local election board for Altoona voting precinct 14-4.
