Run, walk and fair in Claysburg a success

Claysburg Education Foundationás 5K Derby Dash Run, Wellness Walk and Health & Wellness Fair for 2017, which benefits the Claysburg Backpack Program, was a success.

The events were held on May 6 and students 18 and under could participate with no entrance fee. Five groups helped to fund this project.

Approximately 35 people ran the race. And others participated in the Wellness Walk.

Before the 9 a.m. event, the Foundation sponsored a Health and Wellness Fair that featured eight Blair and Bedford County businesses with informational booths.

Olympian Brian Sell, originally from Northern Bedford School District and now residing in Lancaster County, participated in the race and passed out the awards. Certificates were awarded to the top three men and women overall followed by certificates awarded by age category.

The top three winners in the menás category were James Dunmore, Connor Laird and Jordan Keith. The top three winners in the womenás category were Quinn McElhenny, Jessica Holsinger and Emily Claar.

For details on timing and age group results, please access the Founda-tionás website at www.claysburg educationfoundation.org.

This race was âA Member of Cove Challenge Seriesã which is a consortium of six races for the 2017 season throughout the Cove, East Freedom, Williamsburg and Claysburg areas.

Participants in these six races will receive points as part of the consortium and winners and prizes of the overall series will be announced in late 2017.

A staff of approximately 30 volunteers, including members of the Claysburg Backpack group, assisted with everything from registration to setting up and tearing down.

The Claysburg Volunteer Fire Company handled traffic control.

Profit from this yearás event was over $1,100. However, the Foundation had earlier made the decision that this yearás proceeds would benefit the Claysburg Backpack Program, and they donated a $1,500 check to them several months ago.
