Yesteryear

Local railroad history buff Gary Clare of Duncansville submitted these photos from the Red Arrow Train Wreck on Feb. 18, 1947, near the Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, in which 25 people were killed. The FBI sent a special agent from the Philadelphia Field Office to investigate. The Altoona Postmaster sent a crew of seven men from the Altoona Post Office to help recover the scattered mail. They are shown in the center of the photo. Clare is trying to identify the third man from the bottom left in the photo (smoking a cigar). At left is a close-up of the man. Anyone with information can contact Clare at smithfurniture@verizon.net or 695-5635.

Readers are encouraged to send or deliver old local photographs of general interest for use in Yesteryear. Information about people and places should be included. Photos must be 30 years old or older and should be sent to Yesteryear, Altoona Mirror, P.O. Box 2008, Altoona, PA 16603, or delivered to the Editorial Department.
