Penn State laureate to give lecture

Rebecca Strzelec, professor of visual arts, program coordinator of visual arts studies at Penn State Altoona, and the university’s 2016-17 laureate, will offer a lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Edith Davis Eve Memorial Chapel on campus.

Her lecture, “Family Jewels: Redefining Future Heirlooms Through Concept and Technology,” is part of her statewide tour as laureate.

The Penn State laureate is an honorary position held by a full-time faculty member in the humanities or arts.

The laureate is assigned half-time for one academic year to bring an enhanced level of social, cultural, artistic and human perspective and awareness to a broad array of audiences.

Strzelec’s work focuses on investigating the ways wearable objects interact with the surfaces of the body and includes the creation of these wearable objects through computer aided design (CAD) and rapid prototyping or 3D printing.

She has been using 3D printing technologies in her work since 1999.

The event is free and open to the public.

Ag Day to be held Thursday

Penn State Altoona will host its annual Ag Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday in and around the Slep Student Center on campus.

Area residents are invited to stop by to learn more about the College of Agricultural Sciences, view student presentations and displays and see some of Altoona’s clubs and organization’s in action.

Visitors can browse local products at the Farmer’s Market, eat free Berkey Creamery ice cream and take a camel ride.

The campus urges visitors to bring a box of cereal to support the Cereal Drive which benefits the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.

Altoona Curve to host Let’s Move Day

Let’s Move Blair County Day at the Altoona Curve will be held at 1 p.m. April 30 at the Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona.

A free health fair will be held on the concourse during the game with wellness information. Trophies will be presented to winning team of Corporate Wellness Challenge, involving employees of numerous local businesses.

The purpose is to implement healthy lifestyle tips, learn how to make small positive changes with a big impact on your wellbeing.

Let’s Move Blair County is part of the Healthy Blair County Coalition (with support from UPMC Altoona, Nason Hospital and Tyrone Regional Health System).
