Altoona library announces March programs

n Share your love of reading on Read Across America Day today. Join the library at Hoss’s Family Steak & Sea House, Altoona, for special storytimes at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. No registration required. Stay for lunch and dinner and Hoss’s will donate a percentage of your check to the library. Stop by the library to pick up a flyer/voucher, which is required.

n Join the library for a Card Making Class at 6 p.m. today. The cost of the materials is $6. Space is limited. Register at the Adult Circulation Desk or call 946-0417, ext. 125.

n Learn how to create delicious, easy and healthy foods using essential oils at 6 p.m. today during “Essential Oils Cooking 101” at library. Call 946-0417, ext. 125, to register for this free program.

n The Blair County Federation of Democratic Women will present two movies at the library. The first, “Girl Rising,” will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday. The second is “One Woman, One Vote (American Experience)” at 5:30 p.m. March 20. The screenings are free, and there will be refreshments and a guided discussion following each film.

n The library will host an All-Day Knit-In from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the board room. Come for a few hours or stay all day. Teachers will be available. Beginners should take size 8 needles and some light-colored yarn. This is a free program.

n Children ages 12 and younger, along with caregivers, are invited to a Super Saturday event, “IRISH I was at the Library!” at 10:30 a.m. March 11. Children will learn about Irish culture and notable people born in Ireland, as well as other fun activities. Call 946-0417, ext. 123, to register.

n The “Talk About a Good Book” Discussion Group will meet at 6:45 p.m. March 13 in the alumni room at the library. March’s selection is “A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles.

n Get creative with Fired Up Ceramics and create Easter eggs or an Easter bunny for only $5 each at 6 p.m. March 16 at the library. Call 946-0417, ext. 125, to register.

n Families are welcome to enjoy a free movie on the library’s big screen at 1 p.m. March 18 in the library theater. “The Peanuts Movie” (2015, PG, running time 88 minutes) will be shown.

n The Book & Brunch Club will meet at 10 a.m. March 21. The group will discuss “The Tortilla Curtain” by T.C. Boyle. Call 946-0417, ext. 133, for more information.

n The Local Interagency Coordinating Councils is offering developmental and speech screenings, hearing and vision screenings for children birth through age 4 living in Blair County on March 21 at the library. Register by calling 946-8465, ext. 5205.

n A ”Make Your Own Jewelry Class” will be held at 6 p.m. March 23 at the library. Participants will make two pairs of earrings. The cost is $10. Call 946-0417, ext. 125, to register.

n Join the library for a teen-based discussion and activity group that talks about social issues that affect the world. Teen Reading Lounge will be held at 3:30 p.m. March 29. Sign-up is limited to 10 people. This is a program for grades seven to 12. For more information, call Elin at 946-0417, ext. 133.

n Children ages 6 to 12 are invited to join Lego Club at the library. The club meets at 6:30 p.m. on rotating Mondays and 5:30 p.m. Thursdays. Registration is required by calling 946-0417, ext. 123.

n Families of young children are invited to check out the library’s free educational storytime programs for caregiver and child to enjoy together. Developmentally appropriate and enjoyable programs for children ages 1 to 5 are offered weekly. Registration is required. Call the library at 946-0417, ext. 123, to register.

n Children 6 and younger and caregivers are invited to the “One Book Every Young Child” celebration and special author visit at 10:30 a.m. March 30 at the library. Micha Archer will share this year’s selected title, “Daniel Finds a Poem.” Activities and a book signing will follow in the youth room. One free copy per family will be given, while supplies last. n “All Around Town” is the exciting new playscape display in the Youth Room for the month of March. Children are invited to interactively explore the theme of community and citizenship by meeting the different people who live and work in a community through play. Toys include a community sorting center, community helper figures and a set of community vehicles and buildings with garages. This special interactive display is part of the free Play K program. n All are invited to check out the Dr. Seuss-themed artwork at the library created by Lily Pond School Age Sites. The display will be available in the youth room during March to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s Birthday.

n Shamrock Basket Bingo, featuring Longaberger baskets and Vera Bradley products, will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. March 12 at Father Kelley Hall, Fifth Street and 25th Avenue, Altoona. The doors will open at 12:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the library. Tickets are on sale at the library. General admission is $25, and a Super Value Package is $60.
