St. Patrick School sets open houses

NEWRY — St. Patrick School, 731 Patrick Lane will hold open houses and registration for the 2017-18 school year.

The hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday.

SFU to hold Take Back the Night

LORETTO — The Social Work Club at Saint Francis University will host Take Back the Night week from Monday through April 2. This week is dedicated to educating the community about the different forms of violence and to understand its effects.

The following events are free and open to the public:

6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday — Video “It was Rape” with discussion in DiSepio 213/14.

7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday — Armed and Feminine Self Defense Program in Scotus 208.

noon to 1 p.m. March 29 — Healthy Relationships and Sexual Assault Awareness in Padua 110.

7 to 9 p.m. March 29 — Self-defense class co-sponsored by the ASL Club (certified sign language interpreter provided) in Science Center 24.

noon to 1 p.m. March 30 — Children and Youth Services Presentation in Science Center 24.

noon to 1 p.m. March 31 — Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) & Rape Kit Presentation in Sullivan 120.

5 p.m. March 31 — PSI Upsilon “A Day in Her Shoes” on the Mall.

2 p.m. April 2 — Closing ceremony in the Schwab Vista Room.

Ethics, public policy expert to lecture

HUNTINGDON — Henry Olsen, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, will speak on “Donald Trump and the Chamber of Republican Secrets,” at 8 p.m. March 29 in Neff Lecture Hall in the von Liebig Center for Science at Juniata College.

The talk is free and open to the public. His lecture is made possible through the Calvert N. Ellis Memorial Lecture endowment.

‘Artistry in Angling’ set for Saturday

HOMER CITY — The third annual Fly Fishing Event “Artistry in Angling Night Out” will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Disobedient Spirits, 30 S. Main St. Admission is free.

The lineup of vendors includes:

n Angling artwork by Andrea Larko, Jessica Callihan and Ryan Keene.

n Custom-built fly rods by Zeb Tonkavich of Snowman Custom Rod Works; Jeff Coen and Marty Romeo of Deep Bend Rod Works.

n Handmade wooden drift boats and beautiful nets from Dave Zielinski of Down Home Boat Works.

n Handcrafted fly fishing jewelry from Pamela Caldwell Dunlap of WV Fly Girl.

n Wonderful Fly Tyers Josh Miller and Stephen Nymick.

n Handmade poppers by Dan Cardellino.

n The co-author of Keystone Fly Fishing, Brian Shumaker will be signing and selling books.

n Laurel Highlands Guide Services will be showcasing the guided trips and services available on the Youghiogheny River.

n Mad River Outfitters will showcase its guide services for steelhead, bass, musky and pike.

CLP to hold painting party

EBENSBURG — Cresson Lake Playhouse will hold a painting party from 6 to 9 p.m. April 8 at the Cresson Lake Playhouse rehearsal hall at 427 S. Center St. (at the back of the Sun Seekers building).

Participants can bring a favorite bottle of wine or beverage. Cresson Lake Playhouse will provide all painting supplies and artist instructions. Supplies include an 11-by-14-inch stretched canvas, acrylic paint, brushes (for class use) and any other necessary supplies. No art experience is needed by participants.

Reservations can be made by calling 472-4333. The cost is $40 but if participants make a reservation for a friend at the same time, they will each pay $35. (Payment is due at time of reservation.)

Bounce canning starts Thursday

The Greek Life Community at Penn State Altoona will conduct its annual Bounce Canning Weekend from Thursday through Sunday.

Located throughout storefronts in Altoona, Greek Life members will be bouncing basketballs and having fun in hopes of donations from the community.

All proceeds will be donated to Mending Hearts Animal Rescue.

Dinner to benefit fire victims

A spaghetti dinner to benefit Meg Eardley and her family will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. April 2 at Homer’s Gap Civic Association, 135 Preston Lane, Altoona.

The family lost their home to a fire recently.

The meal includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad and a roll for $10.

Tickets can be purchased at Altoona Veterinary Clinic (942-2182), Riggles Gap Sportsmens Club (946-9044) or by calling Deb Fitzgerald (381-1714).

A limited number of tickets are available and advance purchase is strongly advised. Some tickets may be available on site during the dinner on a first-come, first-served basis. Take-out will be available.

Organizers will also hold a bake sale and basket raffle during the dinner.
