WISE Women of Blair County awarded $13,579 in grants to area nonprofit organizations on Jan. 18.

WISE stands for Women Involved in Scholarship and Empowerment.

Funded for the 2017 grant cycle were Family Services Inc., the Gloria Gates Foundation and Mount Aloysius College (working with Contact Altoona).

Family Services Inc., represented by Peggy Campbell, Jackie Bevan and Felicia Robinson, received two grants.

Family Services requested funding for its program to assist in securing documentation for safety, security, learn life skills and self-empowerment and its Domestic Abuse Project/Crime Victim Support program to help empower victims to live independently and help with various fees and expenses for securing their independence.

The Gloria Gates Foundation, represented by Bethany Kanski, requested a grant for its Girls Summit “Stay True to You” program, which is a half-day summit for girls ages 8 to 12 to instill concepts of self-worth, friendship, empowerment and achievement.

Mount Aloysius College, which was represented by Christina Koren, (working with Contact Altoona) asked for funding for its seventh annual Pathways to Empowerment for Women workshop. This workshop is a three-quarter-day workshop with speakers and breakout sessions, as well as lunch for women in the community who want to better themselves.

WISE Women of Blair County annually makes available grant funding for organizations who meet the funding criteria.

The next grant applications are due in October.
