The Altoona Area School District presented four Service to Education Awards during the Nov. 21 regular school board meeting as part of the annual American Education Week observance.

The Service to Education Awards are presented annually to people who have positively impacted the school district’s education program. This year’s honorees include:

n Altoona Police Bike Patrol Officer Pat Himes — Officer Himes regularly is seen in and around the high school campus area.

He and his fellow officers participate in the Lunch with the Law program, periodically eating lunch with AAJHS, AAHS and Penn Lincoln Elementary students.

His community policing skills are truly evident and make a positive impact with Altoona Area students.

n Connie Letscher — A retired AASD elementary teacher, Letcher has volunteered as an adult education tutor for the past six years.

She has tutored many adult learners in English as a Second Language, GED, basic reading and math skills.

Volunteer tutors play a vital role in the Adult Education program providing an invaluable service to all adult learners.

n Marlana Miller — Mrs. Miller, an AASD parent and instructor at Penn State Altoona for pre-service teachers, volunteers many hours at McAuliffe Heights Program at Irving Elementary for PTA, STEAM education enrichment and overall student learning. She assisted second-grade teacher Kathy Oakes in design of an outside Quiet Learning Area, which serves as an extension of the classroom where students can read and create. She works tirelessly for the students at McAuliffe Heights by collaborating with teachers and outside resources to provide 21st Century learning opportunities for students.

n Ted Shoenberger — Ted Shoenberger serves as vice president of the AAHS Music Parents Association, a group of parent volunteers dedicated to the support the AAHS Music Program.

Shoenberger’s responsibilities include the coordination of the concession stands at Mansion Park Stadium, among other duties.

Despite the fact his daughter graduated several years ago and he has no other children in the program, Shoenberger continues to serve the organiza-

tion in support of the students.

A total of 122 Service to Education Awards have been presented since 1984.
