Hollidaysburg library sets Nov. programs, activities

HOLLIDAYSBURG – The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library, 1 Furnace Drive, has announced its November events.

Library hours are 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The library will be closed Nov. 11, 12 and 13 in observance of Veterans Day and Nov. 24, 25, 26 and 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Free e-books are available for computer devices. Download the free app from www.eSebco.com, go to library.eSebco.com and log in with your library card number, login “haplguest” and password “Patron.” For more information, call 695-5961 or email melanie@halibrary.org. These new eBooks are in addition to those available through Overdrive on the library’s website, www.hollidaysburglibrary.org.

More than 50 free Zinio e-magazines are available with your library card. Click on the Zinio logo on the library’s website.

Patrons may access their Evergreen library account online by going to hollidaysburglibrary.org and clicking the blue “Log-In” button on the right. Enter your library barcode and the last four digits of your phone number to create an account. Then change your user name and password in the account preferences tab.

Ancestry: Library Edition is now available for the public to use for free on the library’s public computers.

n “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” is designed to encourage parents to read 1,000 books to their newborn, infant or toddler. Book logs/electronic apps are available to help parents keep track. This self-paced program is free and is guided by the 1,000 Books Foundation. Visit the library for more details.

n Girl Scouts of Western PA hosts Library Girl Scout Daisies (kindergarten and first grade), Brownies (second and third grade) and Juniors (fourth and fifth grade) Troop 46502 from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays at the library. Dues are $2 per meeting. Email melanie@halibrary.org for more information.

n The Display of the Month for November is Jody Walters with a collection of fall-themed figurines.

n The Artist of the Month for November is Hollidaysburg needle artist Joanne McGahagan, who will display framed samplers and a variety of other needlework.

n Story Times will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays and Fridays in November. No signup is needed. All are welcome; children must be accompanied by an adult.

n The Construction Club meets from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays. Signup is required; space is limited. Children ages 6 to 12 will enjoy designing/creating with Lego bricks, wooden blocks and books. To sign up, email melanie@halibrary.com.

n Free Tech Help is provided from 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays to help with technical questions on laptops, tablets, cell phones and other devices. No signup needed; first-come, first-served.

n The Allegheny Essential Oils Club meets from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays. Weekly topics vary and can be found on the club’s Facebook page. All are welcome; email lakotaz@aol.com for more information.

n The Friends of the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library will meet at noon Nov. 3, followed by its membership tea at 1 p.m. All are welcome to attend and meet the Friends.

n The Evening Classics Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 3 to discuss “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles. Copies of the book are available for purchase at the library.

n “Smartphone Basics” will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. (dates to be announced). Drew Dodson of Verizon Wireless, Hollidaysburg, will help phone users with basic skills (Internet, phone contacts, searching for directions, etc.) No signup needed; take your phone and charger.

n “Economics and the Election” will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 5. A 30-minute explanation/presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer time for teens and adults. It will be led by Thomas McGahagan, associate professor of economics at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. There will be snacks.

n “Computer Class: Safety/Security” will be held at 1 p.m.

Nov. 7 and 6 p.m. Nov. 22. Tom Robison will show participants how to safeguard their computer and data. Learn how to make a backup recovery disk in case of computer disaster. Specific questions can be emailed to corporal99@msn.com before the class. No signup is needed; all are welcome.

n The Mystery and Mayhem Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 to discuss “Other Woman” by Hank Phillippi Ryan. Books are available for purchase at the library.

n Doug Bosley, national park service ranger, will speak at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 8 about the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site and the Hollidaysburg Canal Basin.

n Ceramics classes will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 9 (“The Best Gifts Are The Ones You Make Yourself”) and 6 p.m. Nov. 29 (“Ceramic Ornaments”). Kathy Brua of Fired Up Ceramics Co. will provide a ceramic piece, brushes, paint and firing at a cost of $5 per project. Signup is required; space is limited. Choose from a selection of themed projects. Children can participate with their adult’s supervision. Call 935-5490 to sign up.

n “Introduction to Ancestry: Library Edition” will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 15. Josh McConnell will explain this free online resource now available for people who enjoy genealogy. No signup is needed; participants are asked to take their own laptop/charging cord if possible (not required).

n The Inspirational Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. Nov. 16 to discuss “The Chair” by James Rubart. Books are available for purchase at the library.

n “Your Library Account 101” will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 16 and 3 p.m. Nov. 30. Library card-holders are invited to learn how to use their free online library account, including searching the catalog, placing holds, renewing items, getting free e-books and more. No signup is needed; participants are encouraged to take a device (smartphone, tablet, laptop) to use, but it is not required.

n The ABC Photo Society will meet at 7:15 p.m. Nov. 21. The topic will be “Projected Image Results.” Visit abcps.club for more information; all are welcome.

n “Canal Basin Park: Reiser House Outreach Storytime” will be offered at 1 p.m. Nov. 9 and 23. No signup is needed; children must be accompanied by an adult.

n A free movie showing of “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan” (1982; 1 hour, 53 min, rated PG) will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 18. No signup is needed; snacks will be provided.

n “Keep Blair County Beautiful” will meet at 6 p.m. Nov. 30. All are welcome; the meeting’s mission is to inspire and educate people towards a clean, green and beautiful Blair County. KBCB is a Keep America Beautiful Affiliate. Call 942-7472 for more information.

n The Best of Times Book Club will not meet in November; the next meeting is at 2 p.m. Dec. 8 to discuss “In a Dark, Dark Wood” by Ruth Ware. Books are available for purchase at the library.

Area residents are encouraged to support the library’s fall fundraising: raffle tickets, Sheetz coupon books, fresh fruit sale and the fall campaign, as well as the Friends of the Library’s Best of Friends Bookstore, pecan sale and wreath sales.
