Education foundation approves funding

COALPORT — The board of directors of the Glendale Education Foundation received both a copy of the 2015-16 fiscal report, as well as the up-to-date financial statement from treasurer Michelle Sawyer, indicating a respectable growth of finances.

Executive director Richard W. Snyder II announced that the annual golf tournament fundraiser held in June achieved a new record total of $10,500, thanks to 105 sponsors and 96 participating golfers.

In addition, Snyder noted that an upswing in donations, local and memorial contributions and endowments have put the foundation on a very secure financial standing, consequently influencing the board to investigate areas of need at Glendale School District to further enhance and impact the academic programs for students.

Acting on a special written request from the fourth-grade teachers, the board voted to fund the $2,500 necessary for the “Mobile AG-ED Science Lab” to make another appearance at Glendale Elementary School. This program appeared last year via one of the foundation’s Challenge Grants for Teachers.

Checks for this year’s Challenge Grants will be distributed to awardees on Nov. 1.

The board also provided its annual $500 donation to the elementary school’s School-Wide Positive Behavior Program.

It also gave special approval to pre-fund a Challenge Grant application by kindergarten teachers for a field trip to Mishler Theatre to see a live performance on Oct. 12 of the children’s book: “Click, Clack, Moo!”

It learned the foundation logo and other information have been included on thousands of color-printed placemats to be used in local restaurants — touting the organization recently named a “2016 Top-Rated Nonprofit” by Great Non-Profits.org.

Board members also heard about a potential new scholarship from the GHS class of 1997.

It received a “Making a Difference” donation from GBU Annuities in the name of executive director Snyder for his volunteer work with the foundation.

The policy sub-committee was given the task to meet and come up with dollar amounts for various student request scenarios for donations from the foundation for participation in “honor-related” academic events, conferences or seminars.

The next meeting of the foundation’s board of directors is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 31 at Josie’s Restaurant.
