The Salyards helped raise $10,500 for Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger. The funds raised by this event will help to provide pediatric equipment, programs and services at Janet Weis Children’s Hospital and throughout Geisinger Health System.

Civil War descendants to meet

BELLWOOD – The Descendants of Civil War Veterans will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library.

Sharon McClellan will speak on the Fairview Cemetery in Altoona and its restoration.

The meeting is open to the public and may be particularly interesting to people who have ancestors buried at Fairview Cemetery, which is behind UPMC Altoona.

Focus groups to focus on addiction

The Blair Drug and Alcohol Partnership will hold a focus group for any family member or friend who lost a loved one to addiction.

The group will discuss the needs for the families and friends and what the partnership can do to help.

The focus groups will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 27. Participants only need to attend one session.

Sock hop to benefit foster program

The “Let’s Dance for Hope ’50s, ’60s and ’70s Sock Hop” dinner and dance will be held from 6 to 11 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Bavarian Hall, 112 S. 13th St., Altoona.

There will be raffle items, food and music by The Music Jar.

Proceeds will benefit Blair Hope for Families Inc., which hopes to provide a more typical childhood and family experience for children in Blair County’s foster care system.

The group has three areas of focus:

n To provide the items, events and experiences that typify childhood and family but may be missed out on due to their out-of-home placement in the foster care system.

n To prepare teens who will age out of the foster care system for their approaching adulthood with education and employment opportunities through local partnerships.

n To advocate permanence through the creation of a financial grant for individuals and couples in Blair County who are in the process of adoption.

Tickets for the event are $15 per person.

Nursing group changes dinner site

The Altoona Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association has changed the location of its turkey dinner luncheon.

The luncheon will be held at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 3 at The Dream Restaurant, 1500 Allegheny St., Hollidaysburg.

Members will order from the menu and pay individually. RSVP to Carolyn Troy, 1101 Flamingo Drive, Apt. 2104, Altoona, PA 16602 or call Troy at 944-1750. The deadline to sign up is Tuesday.

State Rep. Judy Ward, a nursing alumni, will be the speaker.

Historical society to hear about Mishler

BELLWOOD – The Bellwood-Antis Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

Michael G. Farrow of Altoona will present a PowerPoint slide show on the history of the Mishler Theatre. The program is based on Farrow’s new book, “Altoona’s Historic Mishler Theatre.”

The book contains more than 300 illustrations of original artwork, rarely seen photos, theater advertisements and images of the newly restored and gilded interior. The pictures and detailed text take the reader through 110 years of history. Timelines, historical anecdotes, tables and little-known facts make the reading entertaining as well as informative.

Farrow will have books  for sale at $40. All proceeds will go to the Blair County Arts Foundation for the support of the Mishler Theatre.
