Black Moshannon to hold Monster Hunt Race Oct. 1

PHILIPSBURG – Monsters and race participants will be found at Black Moshannon State Park for the fifth annual Monster Hunt Race on Oct. 1.

The race is a 5K run or hike, in which all proceeds will benefit Leslie Mersinger of Millheim, who was diagnosed with colon cancer in late 2015. She has had surgery and has undergone chemotherapy. She is a single mother of three boys ages 15, 11 and 9. All proceeds from the race will go toward medical expenses and helping with accumulated bills. Mersinger is unable to work at her regular job.

The Monster Hunt Race is held in memory of Mike McCloskey, a dedicated park volunteer and outdoorsman, who lost a long battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia in January 2013 at 41 years old. He was the recipient of the first race.

The Monster Hunt is a scavenger hunt and adventure race. Each station includes a Halloween theme to help participants with the clue. Some of the stations include an obstacle course, complete with a mud pit, an archery station, and a slip and slide to the finish line.

A bake and craft sale will take place at noon at the Environmental Learning Center.

Awards will be given to the first and second place in the 5K run. There is also an award for best costume.

The early bird registration (received by 4 p.m. Sept. 30) is $20. The day-of registration fee is $25. All registration fees are non-refundable. The race starts at 1 p.m. for hikers and runners. Registration forms are available at www.facebook.com/MonsterHuntAtBlackMo, at the park office or by emailing
