Blair Garden Club to hold flower show

The Blair Garden Club will present a Small Standard Flower Show from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 27 in the Community?Room at the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library.

The show, titled “Books in Bloom,” features floral designs, special exhibits and horticultural samples.

Floral designs will reflect themes from beloved literary selections chosen by Blair Garden Club members.

Designs will be organized into four categories: Nonfiction, mystery/thriller, children’s literature and romance.

The special exhibits will align with the message of environmentalist Rachel Carson’s classic “Silent Spring.”

The first exhibit will focus on the critical role of local and global pollinators, and the second will highlight the importance of the conservation of wetlands.

Horticultural samples will be grouped into eight categories, which include flowers, shrubs and vegetables.

Each category description connects the entries to a favorite book title.

Blair Garden Club is a member of National Garden Clubs Inc. Judging and awards will follow national guidelines.

The public is invited to attend the show. There will be no charge for admission, and light refreshments will be served.

This “Books in Bloom” Flower Show is a special event that complements the ongoing community service activities of the Blair Garden Club: planting and maintaining gardens and planters at the Mischler Theatre, the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop, the common area at the Seventh Street Bridge, Baker Mansion and the Discovery Garden at Legion Park; providing hands-on educational experiences for local students; decorating for the holidays at the Altoona Area Public Library and Baker Mansion; providing environment-friendly plantings for wetlands; and coordinating landscaping for Habitat for Humanity projects.

The club welcomes new members; interested persons can contact Rene Hrescak, president, at 317-7521 or renhres@atlanticbb
