BADGE raises money for municipalities

EBENSBURG – Because All?Deserve Great Equipment (BADGE), a new nonprofit 501(c)3 fundraising organization based in Cambria County, is seeking new members.

Several local residents have discussed the quandary of many local municipality police officers. In order for their departments to run effectively, they require proper funding.

Most residents are unaware that many of the officers are part-time employees and are required to supply their own personal equipment. Wages for these officers is slightly above minimum wage.

BADGE has already sponsored gun raffles, basket raffles and various ticket raffles to mention a few. The group has been fortunate in finding several retail businesses (Macy’s of Altoona, Ray’s Lawn Services of Summerhill and Army Navy of Latrobe) who have worked with the organization to provide discounts on merchandise that allowed BADGE to make a profit.

These profits are what are used to purchase equipment for the municipalities.

All BADGE members work on a volunteer basis; no members are paid.

Other than normal operating expenses, all money raised goes directly to the purchase of equipment and/or training that is requested by the municipality. Cambria County municipalities are required to make their request in writing. BADGE officials have existing criteria of how these grants are dispersed.

The most recent fundraisers were a raffle for an Apple computer system and an archery raffle at Archery Zone, Johnstown, on Aug. 6.
