Becky Sheetz golf tournament set for Thursday

ROARING SPRING – The Altoona Sunrise Rotary Club will hold the 19th annual Becky Sheetz Memorial Golf Tournament on Thursday at Iron Masters Country Club.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Special Olympics of Blair County, The Arc of Blair County and the Rotary Club of Altoona Sunrise Foundation.

Becky Sheetz was a strong advocate for people with disabilities until her untimely death from breast cancer at the age of 38.

The Becky Sheetz Recreation Center was named in her honor and now houses The Arc of Blair County and serves individuals with developmental disabilities.

Special Olympics provides training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for children and adults with disabilities while the mission of The Arc is to enhance the quality of life for children and adults and their families through education, advocacy, support and socialization.

The Rotary Club of Altoona Sunrise Foundation provides services and support to local and international communities.

Registration for this year’s tournament is $100 per golfer, which includes golf and lunch. Golfers have the option of teeing off at 8 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. Celebrity golfers for the tournament include past Pittsburgh Pirates Grant Jackson, Rick Reuschel, and Ken Macha.

A variety of awards will be up for grabs, and golfers have the chance to win great prizes, including a vehicle, valued up to $25,000, courtesy Blue Knob Auto for a hole in one.

The 19th annual Becky Sheetz Memorial Golf Tournament is being sponsored by many area businesses. Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield, M&T Bank, Pepsi, Sheetz Inc. and 84 Lumber are this year’s platinum sponsors. Corporate sponsors include ARM Ener-Tech Associates Inc., Bolger Brothers, Brenner Enterprises, Dr. David and Colleen Montrella, E.B. Endres, Highland Tank, Lee Industries, Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Reliance Bank and S&T Bank.

ReMax will sponsor the putting contest, and MVI Field Services of Altoona will sponsor the beverage carts.

Golfers will be eligible to win prizes from Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, Bedford Springs Resort, Carnegie House, Toftrees Golf Resort, Scotch Valley Country Club and Iron Masters Country Club.
