Altoona library sets September programs

The Altoona Area Public Library has announced is programs for September. The library will be closed on Saturday and Monday in observance of Labor Day.

n September is Library Card Sign-Up Month. Adults who sign up for a library card between Sept. 1 and 30 will receive a free DVD rental. Identification with a current address is required. All month, the library is offering free replacement of damaged cards.

Kindle: 2 p.m. Sept. 4.

Nook: 2 p.m. Sept. 11.

iPad/Tablet Ebook: 2 p.m. Sept. 15.

n A free all-day knit-in will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 6. Take a project that you are working on. Meet new people and learn new techniques. First-time knitters should take a pair of knitting needles and a light-colored yarn, and instructors will teach you to knit. Take finished projects for show and tell, along with new ideas or patterns to share.

Altoona Area Public Library Autumn Program will be held at noon Sept. 18 in the library theater. Josh McConnell will present “Preserving Public Memories with Oral Histories.” This free program will feature a local oral history project being developed about former railroad workers and their families. Refreshments will follow.

n Robert Broadwater, author of more than 30 books, will offer the 10-week course “How to Write and Get It Published” at 5 o,m. Mondays beginning Sept. 8 in the library board room. The cost is $60. To reserve a space, call 946-0417. Save $10 by registering before Friday.

n Families of young children are invited to check out the library’s free educational story time program for caregiver and child to enjoy together. Developmentally appropriate programs for children ages 1 to 5 are offered weekly. Registration is required by calling 946-0417, ext. 123.

n The library continues to offer beginner and intermediate computer classes in September. For more information, call Dana at 946-0417, ext. 133.

n Children ages 6 to 12 are invited to join a Lego Club at the library. The club meets at 6:30 p.m. on rotating Mondays. Registration is required by calling 946-0417, ext. 123.

n The Knit and Crochet Group meets at 5:30 p.m. Mondays on the second floor balcony. Seasoned knitters can meet new people and help beginners.

n All veterans, active-duty, reserve and retired members of the U.S. Armed Forces are invited to display their artwork/crafts during the library’s “Stars of Freedom” during the month of November. To participate, contact Kay Shade at 946-0417, ext. 137, before Oct. 17.

n Learn to dress up your door at 5 p.m. Sept. 11 and welcome visitors with wreaths and designs for all seasons and holidays. Participants will learn about various foundations and how to use materials to make your door a standout. The class is free and limited to 15 people. Sign up by calling 946-0417.

n Love to paint? Need to set aside time out of your schedule to be creative and de-stress? Come to the library Paint Space. For a $20 fee, the library will provide the paint, the brushes, the canvases and the space to paint. You provide the creativity. n Make a keepsake ceramic at 6 p.m. Sept. 15. Playtime Pottery experts will instruct participants in painting a mug or salad bowl. The cost is $10. Call 946-0417 to register.

n Families are welcome to enjoy a free movie at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 20 in the library theater. “Frozen” (rated PG, running time 102 minutes) will be shown on the library’s big screen.

n Learn to quilt with instructor Bonnie Gordon at 6 p.m. Sept. 22. Each month through?December, Gordon will teach unique quilting techniques. This month will be English Paper Piecing Hexagon Quilting. There is a $10 kit fee. Space is limited to 10. To register, call 946-0417.
