Tussey Mtn Relay starts Friday
SAXTON – Volunteers committed to fighting cancer in their communities gather once a year at an American Cancer Society Relay For Life event.
Relays nationwide participate in an overnight, family-oriented event that gather communities to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and fundraise for the fight against cancer.
Contributions help the American Cancer Society fight cancer, through research, education, advocacy and patient services.
The Tussey Mountain Relay For Life will be held from 10 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday at the Saxton Liberty Elementary School, 1110 Mifflin?St.
Local cancer survivors will be honored at a Survivors Dinner in the school cafeteria starting at 5 p.m. Registration begins at 11 a.m. for any survivors who have not registered.
Throughout the day, there will be activities for everyone in the family. There will be children’s games beginning at noon, followed by a clown, a baton twirler, zumba, singers, speakers and Raystown DJ Mitchell Rickabaugh.
As teams continue their fundraising efforts, there will be items for sale such as food, crafts, T-shirts, wristbands and raffles. The teams’ tents will be set up with information about different cancers and how cancer has affected the team members and their families.
Since this year’s theme is “Come One, Come All, Let’s Find a Cure for Them All,” the big tent will be decorated in a carnival motif.
Folks with a sweet tooth should enjoy Relay’s Sweet Treats bakery auction at 7 p.m. for teams to show off their appealing baked goods.
In addition, the annual Miss Relay Contest will be held. To participate in the Miss Relay Contest, call Angela at 635-4157 or Jane at 635-3780.
The evening festivities culminate with a luminaries ceremony where purchased luminaries will honor those who have won the battle with cancer, those who are still fighting the battle and remember those who have lost the fight.
Forms for luminaria are at the Saxton Station Pharmacy or at the Relay event. Luminaria sales will be held during the day until 5 p.m. to allow time to prepare for the program.
If you are unable to attend, but still would like to donate toward this cause, visit relayforlife.org or call Angela at 635-4157 or Jane at 635-3780.
