Armed Forces Day events planned
Armed Forces Day will be celebrated Saturday at the Wall That Heals in front of the Van Zandt Medical Center in Altoona.
From 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the public can view displays by local service organizations and military equipment provided the Army Reserves of Altoona and the Pennsylvania National Guard.
At 1:30 p.m., Chapter 967 of the Vietnam Veterans of America will dedicate benches at The Wall That Heals, followed by the main program at 2 p.m.
The program will feature WTAJ’s John Clay as master of ceremonies, the Jaffa Highlanders bagpipers, traditional patriotic opening ceremonies and invocation.
The guest speaker will be Admiral James M. Loy, U.S. Coast Guard, an Altoona native and former commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard and deputy secretary of homeland security.
As many as 20 local organizations will place wreaths at The Wall That Heals.
Vietnam Veterans of America local Chapter 967 will participate in posting and retiring the colors.
The Blair County Veterans Honor Guard will provide a rifle salute, and Pennsylvania Sen. John Eichelberger, along with Larry English, will play “Taps.”
Chairman Lt. Lloyd Peck, U.S. Marine Corps, and the members of the Armed Forces Day Committee wish to thank all of the local businesses and citizens who have helped support this special program honoring past and present members of the military.
