Altoona library sets programs
The Altoona Area Public Library has announced its activities for June.
n Fizz, Boom and Read with the Altoona Area Public Library this summer. The summer reading program is sponsored by the Altoona Mirror and features special guests, electrifying programs and prizes. There is a program for all ages, beginning June 23 through Aug. 1. Registration begins on June 16.
Everyone is invited to the Carnival-Style Kick-Off Party from 1 to 3 p.m. June 18 on the library lawn.
Teens can “Spark a Reaction” at the reading program. It’s a celebration of all things sci-fi. Read to win prizes, enjoy games and special programming. Go to www.altoonalibrary.org, click on the “Teens” tab and find the Summer Reading link to register and for program events and information.
n Learn to download the library’s ebooks to your eReader or learn to use your iPad. To register for a class, call Amy Horell at 946-0417, ext. 129, or email digital
@altoonalibrary.org. The following classes will be held in the board room.
What should I do with my iPad? – 2 p.m. Monday. Learn the basics of your iPad -?how to use the App Store, download apps, etc.
Kindle Class: 2 p.m. June 5.
Nook Class: 2 p.m. June 12.
iPad or tablet Class: 2 p.m. June 30.
n Join in a Knit, Crochet, and Needlework-in from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 7. Take a project in progress and a lunch. Meet new people and learn new techniques. First-time knitters should take a pair of knitting needles and a light-colored yarn, and instructors will teach participants how to knit.
n The library’s book discussion group will meet to discuss the novel “Burgess Boys” by Elizabeth Strout at 6:45 p.m. June 9 on the balcony. Books are available to borrow at the adult services desk. The topic for July 14 will be “Dear Life” by Alice Munro.
n Join Theresa Martin for a greeting card workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 16 on the first floor of the library. The cost is $6 for supplies to make three cards. Seating is limited to 10. Registration is required by calling 946-0417.
n Join knitting enthusiast Shelley Williams to knit a dishcloth at 5 p.m. June 19 in the library’s board room. Williams will instruct you on this easy-to-make project. Participants will need one ball of cotton yarn (brand names such as Peaches & Cream, Sugar & Cream or I Love This Cotton) and size 8 or 9 needles. Seasoned knitters who want to meet new people or help with instruction are also welcome.
n The Johnstown Altoona Geocaching Association, in cooperation with the library, will present another installment of the “Geocaching at the Library” series. “Geocaching 101: Introduction to Geocaching” will be presented for those who are interested in learning what geocaching is and how to take part in this growing hobby. The program will be held at 10 a.m. June 21 in the library theater.
n Families are welcome to enjoy a free movie on the library’s big screen. “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2” (rated PG, running time 95 minutes) will be shown at 1:30 p.m. June 25 in the library theater.
n The library will be closed to celebrate Independence Day on July 4 and 5.
