June Rose (Kells) Johnston of Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of Juniata, celebrated her 103rd birthday on Saturday.
She was born April 12, 1911, the daughter of Dr. Roy and Edith Kells, in Derry, Westmoreland County.
She married John “Scotchie” Johnston, who died in 1972.
She has two children: Patricia Tarlton-Luddy of Hollidaysburg and Bob of Mechanicville, N.Y.
She has six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Johnston is a charter member and officer of the Juniata Civic Association and had graduated with the last graduating class from Juniata High School.
She was employed at Kress’ Department Store and retired from Sunshine Biscuit Co. with 17 years of service.
She was one of the first Altoona City School District crossing guards, assigned to Noble Elementary School.
She is a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Juniata.
Josephine Lombardo, of Redlands, Calif., formerly of Altoona, celebrated her 96th birthday on Feb. 22.
The Redlands Symphony dedicated a concert to her that evening.
She was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Caraffa, Reggio Calabria, Italy, the daughter of Pietro Lombardo and Agata Iofrida.
She is a 1939 graduate of Altoona High School,
In her senior year at Altoona High, she won a voice scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music in New York City.
She married Andrew Spagnola in 1950.
She has three children: Francesca, Toni and Michael. She also has five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mrs.?Lombardo had a long and successful career as an opera singer, as well as being the artistic director and producer of The West Coast Opera Theatre.
She is the recipient of many arts and service awards and also has a star on the Palm Springs Walk Of Fame.
She continues to teach voice and leads an active life.
