UPMC Altoona offers support groups, clinics

UPMC Altoona offers the following support group meetings and patient clinics in March.

They are listed alphabetically according to where they are held.

Support groups meeting at the hospital, 620 Howard Ave., use the Allegheny and Bedford rooms and the rotunda on the sixth floor of the Outpatient Center, and Dining Room A in the cafeteria on Tower 4.

Alzheimer’s disease support group – 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 25, Allegheny Room, 889-2141.

Bariatric information sessions by Allegheny Regional Surgical Associates – 5 to 6 p.m. March 19, rotunda, 889-7500.

Bariatric support group by Allegheny Regional Surgical Associates – 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, rotunda, 889-7500. The group offers education, speakers and support for people who will have or have had bariatric surgery.

Breastfeeding class for expectant parents – 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Allegheny Room, 889-2557.

Breastfeeding support group – 10 to 11 a.m. and 5:30 to 7 p.m. March 26, Bedford Room, 889-2557.

Caregivers Corner support group – 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, Duncansville, 889-3123.

Depression and bipolar self-help group – 7 p.m. Wednesdays, Dining Room A, 889-2141.

Ostomy support group – 2 to 4 p.m. March 16, rotunda, 943-3782.

Parkinson’s support group – March 31, Hoss’s Steak and Sea House, Altoona. George Palmer, executive director of the Center of Independent Living, will speak on how the agency can provide assistance. For more information, including the time, call 889-2141.

Support group for those who have lost a loved one through suicide -?7 p.m. March 19, conference room in the Access Center, Building C, Blair Medical Center, 501 Howard Ave., 889-2141. The group helps people who have experienced or are experiencing specific feelings that they can share with others in the aftermath of a suicide death and are seeking emotional support to cope with specific grief issues.

The following support groups meet at Station Medical Center, 17th Street and Ninth Avenue. For the conference room, use the K4 entrance next to Fresenius Dialysis. For the Sleep Lab, use the main entrance. The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department offers convenient parking and a patient drop-off area on the 17th Street side of the building.

Breast cancer support group – 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, conference room, 935-3738 (Becky).

Grief support group -?6 p.m. Wednesday and March 19, conference room.

La Leche League – 10 a.m. to noon March 10, conference room, 934-0466.

Leukemia and lymphoma support group – 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. March 10, conference room. Bob Strawser, executive director of Mission/Customer Service at UPMC Altoona, will answer questions.

Sleep apnea support group for those using CPAP and BiPAP therapy – 6 p.m. March 25, Sleep Lab waiting room.

Stroke support group – noon to 2 p.m. March 11, conference room, 889-2356.

Veterans brain injury peer support group – 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. March 18. Call for room location, 949-1905.

Wheelchair clinics – 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. March 11, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department, 889-4463. A physician referral and appointment are required.
