Altoona library sets activities for March

The Altoona Area Public Library has announced its programs and activities for March.

n The Youth Room Scholastic Book Fair runs through Saturday.

n Families of young children are invited to check out the library’s free educational story time programs for caregivers and children to enjoy together. Developmentally appropriate and enjoyable programs for children ages 1 to 5 are offered weekly. Registration is required by calling 946-0417, ext. 123.

n The book discussion group will meet at 6:45 p.m. Monday on the library. The topic will be “Enon” by Paul Harding. Copies are available to borrow at the library.

n The Shamrock Basket Fundraiser will take place at 2 p.m. March 16 at Father Kelley Hall, Altoona. Tickets are available at the library or by calling 946-0417, ext. 120.

n Learn how to download and read the library’s ebooks on your Kindle, Nook, iPad or Android tablet at the following free classes:

Kindle Class: 2 p.m. Thursday in the board room.

Nook Class: 2 p.m. March 20 in the board room.

iPad/Tablet Class: 2 p.m. March 27 in the board room.

n The Local Interagency Coordinating Council is offering developmental and speech screenings, hearing and vision screenings for Blair County children from newborn through age 4 on March 14 at the library. Register by calling 946-8465, ext. 5205.

n The library will celebrate Teen Tech Week at 3:30 p.m. Monday through March 14. Tech Week events include coding party (with snacks), playing with a Raspberry Pi and some not-so-techie games.

n Families are welcome to enjoy a free movie on the library big screen at 1 p.m. March 15 in the library theater, featuring “Despicable Me 2” (Rated PG, running time 98 minutes.)

n Learn the basics of your iPad: how to use the App Store, download apps, etc., at 2 p.m. March 31. To register, call Amy Horell at 946-0417, ext. 129, or email

n Are you vegan or are you looking to experiment with vegan cooking or baking? Do you want to sample new heart healthy recipes? Please join us on April 17 at 5:30 in the boardroom for a vegan feast. To participate, simply choose any recipe out of the book “500 Vegan Recipes” and bring it in for sampling. The best recipe will win a copy of the cookbook. Register by April 11 by calling 946-0417, ext. 161.

n Children ages 6 and younger and their caregivers are invited to join in PA One Book Every Young Child on April 11. Enjoy stories, songs, crafts, activities, give-aways and more. Registration is required by calling 946-0417, ext. 123.
