Allied Firemen hold memorial service
HOLLIDAYSBURG -?The Allied Volunteer Firemen’s Association of Blair County held its annual memorial service on Jan. 20 at the Phoenix Fire Station.
The service honors all members of the fire service from Blair County who have passed away during the preceding year.
Also honored were members from outside the county who belong to the Allied association. The list this year showed 45 names of honored members.
The program had music performed by the Southern Cove Firemen’s Choir under the direction of Tina Walters.
Leonard Alwine, chaplain of the association, gave a sermon “One Year to Live” based on Luke 13:1-9.
The memorial address was given by Pastor Jason Schwartzman from the Altoona East End/Fairview United Methodist Church.
His address on “service” was enhanced by the fact that he had served with Americorps in New York City, during and after the Sept. 11 attacks.
Association president Dave Zeek read the roll call of names as secretary Elizabeth Hoffman rang a bell, one chime for each deceased member.
Following the service, the Phoenix firemen served a meal to all in attendance.
