Armed Forces Day event planned for May 18

The public is invited to an annual Armed Forces Day event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18 at the Wall That Heals in front of the Van Zandt Medical Center, Altoona.

Military vehicles will be on display from the Pennsylvania National Guard, Altoona Army Reserves and the Navy/Marine Reserves from Ebensburg.

Eight tents will feature displays and information on military-related organizations. WTAJ anchor John Clay will serve as the master of ceremonies beginning at 2 p.m. The keynote speaker is Sgt. 1st. Class Melanie Rininger.

The ceremony will include Posting of the Colors by the Blair County branch of the Vietnam Veterans of America and a three-gun salute by the Blair County Honor Guard.

Many local organizations will lay wreaths at the Wall That Heals, in honor of the nation’s fallen heroes.

Local Boy and Girl Scout units will assist in the program. The program will also feature music by the Jaffa Highlanders and the Altoona Community Band.

The event will conclude with the playing of “Taps.”
