Library, hospital to sponsor health, safety fair March 2 in Bellwood

BELLWOOD – Bellwood-Antis Public Library and Tyrone Hospital will co-sponsor the seventh annual Family Health & Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library, 526 Main St. The event brings together nearly 30 area agencies and organizations who will provide a variety of free health screenings and health- and safety-related information for people of all ages. Community members and event attendees are invited to bring canned or other nonperishable food items to benefit the Bellwood Area Food Bank.

A variety of give-away items will be provided. The Friends of the Library will also hold a refreshment sale during the event.

Events offerings from participating organizations are as follows:

Tyrone Hospital: Screenings of total blood cholesterol, blood glucose, anxiety and depression; information about Tyrone Hospital services, the Breast Cancer & Women’s Health Institute of Central Pennsylvania, proper disposal of medications, advance directives and concussion. Children are invited to bring their dolls, teddy bears or other special friends to receive a medical check-up.

ProCare: screenings for grip strength, body mass index and functional movement.

Home Nursing Agency: Blood pressure screening.

Lasser’s Shoe Fly: I-step digital foot scan screening.

Blair County Early Intervention Agency: Developmental screening for children ages birth to 6 years old.

Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8: Health development screenings for children ages 3 to 5 years.

The American Cancer Society: Skin cancer screening as well as information about the Northern Blair Relay for Life event. WIC: Resource information for women, infants and children.

Family Resource Center: Information on support services for families.

Operation Our Town: Fingerprinting and safety awareness information.

Burgmeier’s: On-site shredding of up to 25 pounds of personal documents per person. Blair County Dairy Princess Tiffany Phesant: Information regarding the importance of milk and dairy products in our diet.

Altoona Regional Health System: Respiratory screening.

Inter-Municipal Relations Committee: How to recycle household chemicals and electronics. Home Instead: Resources for in-home senior care.

Penn State Cooperative Extension: Information on food preservation, canning and freezing.

Center for Independent Living of South Central Pennsylvania: Resource information.

Udi’s: Information on gluten-free foods.

Hope Center: Information on community resources.

Excelsior Fire Department: Fire trucks on display and a chance to meet local firefighters.

Heaven Scent Search & Rescue Mantrailing Bloodhounds: Bloodhounds on site, along with information about their services. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts: Information on scouting and community projects.

Free car seat safety checks will also be provided at the Excelsior Fire Hall, 399 S. First St., from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Car seat inspections will be provided, along with assistance for proper installation. An evaluation of each seat for possible recalls will also be conducted.
