Honor Guard marks milestone
The Blair County Veterans Honor Guard recently reached a milestone.
On Dec. 6, it performed military rites for its 500th veteran, Cmdr. Bill Nelson said.
The organization, founded in 2008, has about 40 members who will provide military funeral honors for eligible veterans, at the request of the veteran’s family. The honor detail typically includes the folding of an presenting of the American flag.
During its first year, Nelson said the honor guard performed rites at 45 services. The number has steadily increased, he said, up to about 120 services in a year.
“We do it whenever a family asks,” Nelson said. “There’s no pay involved.”
Most requests for military rites are funneled through a local funeral director, he said.
