2019 Health-O-Rama returns to Central PA: 15th annual event to be held at the Logan Valley Mall
The 2019 Health-O-Rama will return to the Logan Valley Mall on Friday, Aug.16. Health-O-Rama, in its 15thyear, is free of charge and is sponsored by the Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania. Sherri Stayer, practice manager at Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania, said the event is a way for people in the region to get screenings and healthcare information.
“The event offers the community the ability to come in and hear speakers who are specialists and experts in their fields and offers the opportunity for free screenings,” she said.
The event will feature hearing and blood pressure tests and health screenings. There will also be nutritional information and healthcare information available as well as samples and giveaways.
Dr. George Zlupko and Dr. Michael Zlupko, both doctors at the Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania, will be on hand at the event. Dr. George Zlupko will talk about e cigarettes and vaping and Dr. Michael Zlupko will present about lung disease FAQS and misconceptions.
The father and son duo will end the day as they have in the past, with their popular cook off.
“It’s different every year. We don’t know ahead of time what they will be cooking. It’s a lot of fun,” Stayer said.
The beginning of the day will start with an optional walk, called the Beacon of Light on Lung Cancer Benefit Walk that benefits the Lung Disease Foundation of Central PA. Registration is from 7:30 to 8 a.m. that day or can be completed beforehand online or by visiting the Lung Disease Center of Central Pennsylvania. The walk will take place from 8 to 10 a.m.
Anyone is encouraged to join the doctors and staff from the Lung Disease Foundation of Central Pennsylvania to participate in the walk. It helps to raise money for treatments for lung cancer patients and provides education and resources on the dangers of lung cancer.
The Beacon of Light Walk is sponsored by Select Specialty Hospital of Johnstown. Connie Miller, director of business development at Select Specialty Hospital, said the hospital has sponsored the event for the past six years.
“Select Specialty Hospital has continued to sponsor the event due to our shared passion to educate and support patients with lung associated complications. The event supports our local cancer patients and increases awareness of services available to individuals diagnosed with lung cancer or respiratory conditions. As partners of the medical community, this event dovetails our services and mission,” Miller said.
Registration for the walk is $10. Miller hopes the walk increases community awareness of the danger of lung cancer and the services available to the community. She also encourages people to attend because it is a good time — held rain or shine.
“The Beacon of Light Walk is a blast. The walk takes place indoor at the Logan Valley Mall where the weather is not a factor,” Miller said.
She additionally said the walk helps to make a difference to people in the area. “It is a great way to give back to the community for a great cause. You have the opportunity to meet individuals or family members directly affected by lung cancer or lung diseases. Select Specialty Hospital donates awesome prizes for the largest sponsor amount raised and the most walked laps. It truly is a great way to give back to the community especially those diagnosed with lung cancer or lung related medical conditions. Come out and make a difference,” said Miller.
Stayer additionally encourages the community to participate in the walk to help others and for the health benefits associated with walking. She said, “We really encourage the public to come and walk. The first 25 people who register with their form and payment will receive a swag bag.”
Whether partaking in the walk, in Health-O-Rama or in both events, Stayer strongly urges the community to drop in on the day’s activities.
She said, “The people who attend really enjoy the walk and listening to the speakers. The event is inside, so it is climate controlled for the middle of August. There is also plenty of parking. We hope to see the community there.”
