Bedford Presbyterian Church to host Sunday hymn festival

Concert is part of Music with Meaning series

Bedford Presbyterian Church will hold a Transfiguration Sunday Hymn Festival featuring guest organist Kim Rauch and pianist Beth Hull at

2 p.m. Sunday. The concert is the fifth presentation in its Music with Meaning series.

The concert is free and will include an offering for Love In the Name of Christ. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall after the concert.

The program will include hymns, readings, meditations and choral and organ music inspired by the mysterious event when Jesus took three disciples — Peter, James and John — up a mountain where his deity was clearly revealed. The concert will include performances by the Bedford Presbyterian Chancel Choir and the Bedford Community Singers with Gay Piller directing.

Rauch is a retired music educator from the Richland School District in Johnstown, where he directed the choral program, instructed music classes and served as producer for Richland’s theater and musical theater program. He is a graduate of Penn State in music education and received a Master of Music in church music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J.

He did additional graduate studies in musicology at the University of Pittsburgh and was assistant organist at Heinz Memorial Chapel and director of the Pitt Men’s Glee Club for three years.

In 2001, Rauch founded Inclined to Sing, the Children’s Chorus of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a guest conductor for elementary and middle school choirs in Cambria, Somerset and Westmoreland counties.

Currently, Rauch is a University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown professor of music, serves as organist/choir director for Laurel Trinity Lutheran Church, Jennerstown, and is involved in the Steeples Project in historic Cambria City, having served most recently as the program director for The Grand Halle on Broad Street, Johnstown.

The Bedford Presbyterian Church ‘Music with Meaning Concert Series’ was instituted in 2011 with the purpose of providing quality musical performances while benefitting a local charitable organization of the artist’s choosing. Rauch chose Love INC. as the local charity.
