Book club

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 806 13th St., will begin its fall season of the Burning Books Club beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday. The club meets the fourth Monday of each month. The public is welcome to attend.

The selections for discussion include Dreamers of the Day by Mary Doria Russell, Sept. 25; The Round House by Louise Erdrich, Oct. 23; and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Nov. 27.

The church’s book club was formed by former Pastor Christina Jillard, who before seminary was assistant director of library services in Dauphin County. The club’s charge is to discuss books that delve into the burning issues of the day.

Prayer meeting

Andre McCarville, Catholic Campus Minister from Penn State Altoona, will be the guest speaker at the Cathedral Charismatic Prayer Meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament.

McCarville is a gifted, Spirit-filled speaker and sought after retreat leader, in addition to his ministry at Penn State Altoona. The presentation will focus on “Evangelization: Beyond Setting A Good Example.” The meeting will begin with praise and worship. A time for prayer ministry will follow Andre’s presentation. All are welcome.

Mercy Through Music

Mount Aloysius College, one of 16 U.S. colleges and universities affiliated with the Religious Sisters of Mercy, will wrap up its Mercy Week 2017 celebration today with Mercy through Music at noon in Cosgrave Lobby.

On Saturday, Mountie alumni are invited to a Catherine McAuley Tea Program as the College’s Alumni Weekend begins.

Life Chain

The annual Life Chain will be held from 2-3 p.m. Oct. 1. The Life Chain will form along 17th Street; parking will be available in the Station Medical Center lot. The Life Chain is sponsored by Citizens Concerned For Human Life.

Ham and turkey dinner

Upper Claar Church of the Brethren, Claysburg, will serve its annual fall buffet-style ham and turkey dinner at 5 p.m. Sept. 30.

The meal will include all the trimmings. Donations accepted. For more information, call 239-5449.

Craft vendors sought

The East End United Methodist Church, 405 East Hudson Ave., Altoona, will hold a “Cheery Crafts, Food and Candies” event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 2. Craft vendors are invited to participate.

Reformation Choir Festival

In honor of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, Zion Lutheran Church, 500 Allegheny St.,, Hollidaysburg, will host a Reformation Choir Festival at 7 p.m. Oct. 1.

The festival will feature Bible readings, hymns and a mass choir made up of members from at least five area churches from two counties under the direction of a guest conductor. A reception will follow the program. The public is invited.
