The Altoona Area School District, Dr. Thomas R. Heslep superintendent, received an award from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction for outstanding leadership in the development of computer instruction in mathematics and science.

25 YEARS AGO:

Sept. 1, 1992

About 10 Altoona workers were to retire and the Johnstown Management Sectional Center was to close with the loss of 20 jobs as the U.S. Postal Service planned to close offices and cut thousands of positions nationwide. Altoona Postmaster Clarence Hopkins said that Altoona jobs were safe.

10 YEARS AGO:

Sept. 1, 2007

The Port Authority World Trade Center Traveling Memorial, which had visited 27 states since the 9/11 attacks in New York City six years before, was to be in Somerset over five days the next month. It had been at the Blair County Convention Center two years before and carried more than 200 items from the attack.
