Novena

The fifth Novena of 2017 to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Therese, the Little Flower, offered by the Discalced Carmelite Nuns of Loretto, will open on Monday and end May 30.

Those who wish to share in the graces and blessings of these nine days of prayer, and in the private prayers of the Carmelite Nuns during the Novena, should send petition requests to Mother Prioress, Discalced Carmelite Monastery, P.O. Box 57, Loretto, PA 15940.

All intentions submitted to the nuns will be remembered with the special Novena prayers following the daily Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in the sisters’ chapel. Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament is held every Sunday at

4 p.m. and the first Friday of each month. Everyone is welcome to attend the Benediction followed by the veneration of the relic of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus of the Holy Face.

Vacation Bible school

Maker FunFactory vacation Bible school will be held daily from 9 a.m. to noon June 19-23 at St. John the Evangelist-Lakemont.

The cost for children of parishioners is $30. For families with three or more children, the cost is $80. The cost for children of non-parishioners is $35. Checks should be made payable to St. John Parish. The registration fee covers the cost of materials, supplies, a T-shirt for each participant, a CD for each family, daily snacks and crafts. Deadline for registration is June 5.

Stuffed meatloaf dinner

Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 136 Hilltop Road, Lilly, will host a stuffed meatloaf dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Cost for the dinner is $10 for adults, $5 for children under age 12 and free for children under 2. Takeouts are available for $10. For more information, call 884-0205.

Concert

Steve and Apryl Caldwell, Gospel Sounds Duet, will present a concert “There is Power in the Name of Jesus” at 10 a.m. on May 28 at Abundance of Grace Church, 1700 8th Ave., Altoona

Music camp

Students of any age who play either a band or orchestra instrument are invited to participate in the 11th annual Instrumental Music Camp at Wehnwood United Methodist Church.

The camp will be held June 18-23 at Wehnwood UMC, 2511 Juniata Gap Road. Those interested should register at wehnwoodumc.net.

Gospel Music Festival

Armagh United Methodist Church, 570 W. Philadelphia St. Ext., (old Route 22) Armagh, will host a gospel music festival from

6-10 p.m. today and 1-10 p.m. Saturday.

The kitchen will be open from 5-8 p.m. Friday and noon-8 p.m. Saturday during the festival.

Free soup

The 28th Street Church of the Brethren, 2800 Union Ave., Altoona, will host a “Free Soup” meal in the Fellowship Hall from 11:30 a.m. to

1 p.m. Saturday. The meal includes spaghetti and meat sauce, salad, roll, dessert and beverage. There are no income guidelines, and all are welcome to attend. Those attending are asked to enter by the side basement door.

Free luncheon

Providence Presbyterian Church, 2401 Broad Ave., Altoona, will host a free luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The menu will include a variety of homemade soups, a sandwich, beverages, desserts and fruit. Everyone is invited to attend.

Program to avoid scams, fraud

St. John the Evangelist Church, 309 Lotz Ave., Altoona, will host a program on protecting yourself and your family from scams and fraud at

4 p.m. Sunday in the Father Bailey Hall. There is no charge for this program presented by Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Jeff Petucci of Troop G, Hollidaysburg. The program is sponsored by Family Life Committee, St. John The Evangelist.
