Annual event for moms, families coming Friday

This year, the Mirror Moms magazine will hold its fifth Expo at the Logan Valley Mall and will focus on mothers.

“It’s basically an event with businesses and vendors who are there to share their resources and how they can help to benefit moms and their children, ” said Candy Holliday, Mirror Moms liaison.

Guest speakers, entertainment and vendors will have information and resources geared toward moms.

“I wanted to pull it back and find what resources are available for Mom. … We don’t take enough for ourselves, and there are a lot of great things an hour, a week or a few times a month can really do for her,” Holliday said.

UPMC Altoona is the main sponsor of the Mirror Moms Expo.

“Many of its departments will be represented at the expo,” said Dana Shade, Community Education Coordinator at UPMC Altoona.

James W. Barner Community Pediatric Dental Clinic will present a demonstration on proper brushing and flossing techniques. Information about sugar content in drinks will be available, as well as free toothbrushes and floss.

Other community organizations will also be involved. At 11:30 a.m., Point of Fitness will show a yoga demonstration; at noon, Reiki Center for Body and Mind will present a Reiki demonstration – a Japanese method used for reducing stress and promoting relaxation and healing. The PA Martial Arts Alliance will offer women’s self defense demos.

“Altoona Family Physicians will focus on concussions in children and post-concussion recommendations,” said Shade.

Trauma services will also have information on concussions in sports.

UPMC Altoona representatives also will present information on infection control, germs and proper hand washing, breast-feeding, and good nutrition for families including healthy snacking, how to pack a healthy lunch and how to handle a picky eater, Shade said.

Safe Kids Blair County will provide information on child passenger seat safety, stroke information and poison prevention. And there will be information on the harmful effects of smoking and tobacco, and pulmonary function screening.

There will also be an opportunity to sign up for the Healthy Living Club and a free T-shirt giveaway.
