Warm up with live

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, Jan. 5 through Thursday, Jan. 11.

Typically, the first weekend of the New Year, following the New Year’s Day holiday, tends to be one of the slower weekends of the year for live music. But there is activity on the area live music stages this weekend for those who are not afraid of the frigid cold and who want to shake their cabin fever.

McGarvey’s features New York City-based power pop/punk band American Pinup, headlining a triple-bull that also features Altoona/Pittsburgh-based Young Lungs and local rising punk force The Flannels. That show starts at 10 p.m. Meanwhile, at Ebensburg’s Castle Pub, Pittsburgh’s Mickey & the Snakeoil Boys headlines a triple-bill that also features former Marauders frontman Ben Dumm with Josh Dukes and Abe Weber, and Big Daddy & the Mojo Men, featuring former Stix and Stones singer Morgan James. That show begins at 9:30 p.m.

If you want to relieve some stress by hitting drums, check out the Altoona West African Drum Circle, which reconvenes Sunday evening at 6 p.m. inside the Allegheny Ballet Company facility on 11th Avenue. Admission is free.

And if you need a break during the week, check out the week’s slate of open mic-themed events; including every Tuesday night at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg (hosted by the Backyard Rockers), Wednesday evenings at the Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society in Altoona, and Thursday’s Open Stage event hosted by Rue Moyer at Greenbeans Coffeehouse in Altoona starting at 6 p.m.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
