The Reverend Brings the Heat Again!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, April 5 through Thursday, April 11.

One of the big highlights on area stages this weekend is the return of national recording act The Reverend Horton Heat, conducting another service of the church of rock’n’roll on the stage of McGarvey’s in Altoona on Saturday night. Jim “Reverend Horton” Heath, his longtime cohort Jimbo Wallace on upright bass and Arjuna “RJ” Contreras on drums will bring their fire-and-brimstone brand of high-velocity Texas rockabilly (also known as psychobilly), and will likely share a few tunes from their latest album, “Whole New Life,” plus many familiar Reverend favorites. The Reverend brings guests to this service in the form of two opening acts: Columbia, Missouri-based rhythm & blues performers The Hooten Hallers, and Nashville’s The Legendary Shack Shakers. The show begins at 7 p.m., and tickets are available through Eventbrite and at the venue.

McGarvey’s will also host a musical tribute to Alice In Chains singer Layne Staley on Friday night. “Cut Short: A Musical Tribute to Layne Staley” will feature a cast of area musicians celebrating Staley’s musical legacy with performances of many of the classic Alice In Chains songs he sang on before his death on April 5, 2002. Members of Maul, Negan and other performers will begin the musical salute at 9 p.m.

Many area favorites are on the stages this weekend; check the listing below to find out who plays where and when.

And if you are up for a road trip and enjoy the taste and smell of maple syrup, Meyersdale in Somerset County hosts the final weekend of the two-weekend Pennsylvania Maple Festival on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can enjoy all things maple, including locally-made maple syrup as part of the local Lions Club’s all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast, maple candy, maple cookies, plus other maple confections and concoctions. Other food vendors will be present as well. Displays, syrup-making demonstrations and a classic car show will also take place. Live music happens in the event’s Festival Park, including country performer Claire Whalen on Saturday and acoustic performer Kayla Robertson on Sunday.

For outdoor shows, in the event of inclement weather, please call or use social media to check ahead to make sure the show is still taking place, especially if you are driving any distance to attend.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
